Pod textom svietili dve voľby: ÁNO a ZOSTAŤ.
A potom boli vonku.
Ulice žiarili pod fialovou oblohou a pred odhlasovacou bránou stáli tri avatary.
Nox.
MiraByte.
SamZero.
Bez hráčov. Bez ovládania. A stále pripojení.
„To som neurobil,“ povedal Denis do spoločného hovoru.
Zo slúchadiel sa ozvala Mira, tentoraz ostrejšie. „Viem.
„Super,“ zamrmlal Denis. „Takže som prihlásený, ale nemám kontrolu.“
„Nie si prihlásený,“ opravila ho Mira. „Len ťa server pustil pozerať sa.“
„To je ešte horšie.“
O pár minút stáli ich avatary pri kontrolnom uzle, nízkej veži z priesvitných panelov. Nad ňou sa otáčali tenké kruhy svetla. Každý z nich ukazoval inú stopu: modrú pre Noxa, fialovú pre MiraByte a bielu pre SamZero.
Mira na svojom tablete otvorila záznamy z posledných dní. Porovnávala ich s pohybmi avatarov. Čísla, šípky a časové značky sa jej odrážali v očiach.
„Pozrite,“ povedala napokon.
„To nebola kritika.“
„Viem.
Denis by presne to isté urobil.
„A možno čaká, či to pochopíme my,“ dodala Mira.
Pri kontrolnom uzle znovu zablikal sivý škrabanec. Samuel sa prudko narovnal. Nebola to čiarka.
Cink. Šum. Krátke dvojité pípnutie. Potom pustil okamih, keď Denis skúšal prevziať Noxa. Cink. Šum. Dvojité pípnutie.
Pri treťom prehratí znížil rýchlosť.
Medzi slovami Relácia ukončená sa rozpadol jeden znak. Z písmena áno na chvíľu vzniklo slovo návyk.
„Vidíte?“ Samuel ukázal na obrazovku. „Server nečaká, kým odklikneme odhlásenie. Čaká, kým zasa spravíme to, čo robíme vždy.“
Dôležitý okamih
Mira si prešla prstami po okraji tabletu. „To by vysvetľovalo stopové profily.
„A keď ja budem ticho, potvrdí SamZero,“ doplnil Samuel.
Nebolo to veľké filmové odhalenie. Skôr nepríjemná vec, ktorá konečne dostala meno.
Dohodli sa na jednoduchom postupe. Denis nebude dávať príkazy, kým sa všetci nezhodnú. Mira prestane naháňať každý údaj a vyberie iba to, čo tím naozaj potrebuje. Samuel bude hovoriť hneď, keď si niečo všimne, aj keby si nebol istý.
„A čo majú robiť avatary?“ spýtal sa Denis.
„Možno nás budú kopírovať,“ povedala Mira. „Tak im ukážme niečo nové.“
Znovu sa pripojili k pohľadu na mesto. Tentoraz nešli za avatarom, ktorý bežal vpredu. Všetci traja sledovali jednu mapu a rozprávali pokojne, hoci im v slúchadlách hučal digitálny vietor.
Fialový avatar zmazal štyri štítky a ponechal iba jeden.
Ale ukazuje opačne než most.“
Nox sa otočil. MiraByte tiež. Všetci traja avatary vykročili k úzkej servisnej chodbe pod mostom.
Pri odhlasovacej bráne sa znovu rozsvietilo svetlo. Tentoraz nebolo biele. Malo jemný cyanový odtieň, podobný žiare Echo.
SYSTEM: Zmena správania zaznamenaná.
Denisovi sa zrýchlil tep. „Funguje to.“
„Spolu?“
Mira prikývla. „Spolu.“
Samuel sa usmial. „A bez hrdinského sólo skoku.“
SYSTEM: Auto-play is now active.
Mira zbledla. „Ak to Nox dokončí, server dostane naše reflexy ako pravidlo. Nie iba ako záznam.“
„A bude ich používať ďalej,“ doplnil Samuel.
Zdvihlo ruku, no nezastavilo ich.
Len sledovalo.
A pod hlavnou serverovou vežou sa tri avatary rozbehli do tmy, zatiaľ čo odhlasovacia brána za nimi ticho zhasla.
Pokračovanie nabudúce…
The Endless Server, part 11: Logout Impossible
The Story Begins
The logout gate stood at the very edge of the digital city, where the neon streets suddenly ended in white fog. Above the metal arch, a big blue EXIT sign floated in the air. Beyond it, nothing could be seen, only empty light, calm and suspiciously clean.
Denis shifted his headset down around his neck. “So, we have a plan. We click log out, disappear, and for a while we do not have to deal with what the server learned from our voices.”
“That sounds like a plan made by someone who wants to skip the tutorial,” Mira said. Purple lines of data jumped across her tablet. “After the Archive of Lost Voices, I’d like us to check first if this world will even let us leave normally.”
Samuel stood one step behind them and stared at the gate. His avatar, SamZero, had a white mask with no expression, but Samuel’s real face made one thing clear. Something felt wrong.
“Did you notice the sign is blinking?” he asked.
Denis looked up. EXIT went dark for a moment, then came back. Between the letters, a tiny gray scratch flashed, like a mark on glass.
“It’s just graphics,” he said, though he did not sound fully sure.
The gate gave a soft tone. A window opened in the air in front of them with a question.
SYSTEM: Confirm session end.
Under the text, two choices glowed: YES and STAY.
Mira frowned. “Normally it would say Log out. Not session end.”
“The meaning is the same.” Denis lifted his hand.
“Not always,” she replied.
In the end, all three confirmed YES. The world shrank for a second into a thin line. Denis felt the weight of Nox’s blue neon jacket vanish. Mira heard her tablet vibrate back in the real world on the table. Samuel lost the distant sound of the city in his headphones.
And then they were out.
Denis opened his eyes in his room. The monitor in front of him went dark. From his headphones came a simple, quiet crackle. On the screen, the words blinked: Session ended.
“Yes,” he breathed out and reached for his glass of water.
At that same moment, his phone buzzed.
MIRA: Look back at the monitor. Now.
An unpleasant tingle ran down Denis’s back. The screen should not have been on anymore. Even so, the digital city appeared there. Streets glowed under a purple sky, and in front of the logout gate stood three avatars.
Nox.
MiraByte.
SamZero.
No players. No control. And still connected.
Nox moved first. The blue figure turned away from the gate and walked into the city.
“I did not do that,” Denis said into the group call.
Mira’s voice came through his headphones, sharper now. “I know. MiraByte is connecting to the city data node right now. And I do not have hands on the keyboard.”
Samuel stayed silent for a long time. Then he said softly, “SamZero is following them. But he is not looking ahead. He is looking at the ground.”
Nox ran along the shortest route between bright panels. It was exactly how Denis moved toward any new goal: fast, direct, and without unnecessary stops. A new arrow appeared in front of the avatar, one none of them had seen before.
NEW GOAL: COMPLETE THE TASK IN PROGRESS.
“What task?” Denis leaned toward the monitor. “We do not have anything in progress.”
“The server clearly thinks otherwise,” Mira said.
Meanwhile, MiraByte stopped at a рекламná wall. Every flashing picture, every tiny texture error, she marked with a purple tag. The air filled with icons: PATTERN, EXCEPTION, REPEAT.
When Things Start to Change
“Am I doing that?” Mira asked.
“Kind of,” Samuel answered. “You just usually breathe while doing it.”
“Funny.”
SamZero bent down beside a drainage channel at the edge of the street. In its shiny surface, the logout symbol appeared for a moment, but upside down. The white avatar tilted his head. Then he kept going, as if he knew exactly what he was looking for.
Denis watched Nox go around a blocked street. The avatar did not hesitate even at a side map marked with a yellow triangle. Forbidden area. In earlier episodes, they had learned that yellow triangles in The Endless Server were not decorations.
“We have to stop them,” Denis said. “I’ll log in again and take control of Nox.”
“Wait,” Mira said.
“Wait for what? For my avatar to reach something that explodes in data?”
“Wait for proof that your idea will not make things worse.”
But Denis had already pressed log in. The monitor flashed, the image loaded, and for a moment he saw his own hands in Nox’s blue gloves. He tried to move left.
Nox moved right.
Denis tried to open the menu.
The menu opened, but then a new message covered it.
SYSTEM: Session ended. Trace profile remains active.
Then Nox sped up.
“Great,” Denis muttered. “So I’m logged in, but I have no control.”
“You are not logged in,” Mira corrected. “The server just let you watch.”
“That is even worse.”
A few minutes later, their avatars stood at the control node, a low tower made of clear panels. Thin rings of light turned above it. Each ring showed a different trace: blue for Nox, purple for MiraByte, and white for SamZero.
Mira opened the records from the last few days on her tablet. She compared them with the avatars’ movement. Numbers, arrows, and time marks reflected in her eyes.
“Look,” she said at last. “The server did not keep only our decisions. It saved the way we reach them.”
“So?”
“Nox remembers that when you feel unsure, you take charge and choose the fastest path. MiraByte remembers that when things get messy, I collect every piece of data. SamZero remembers that Samuel watches small details while the others deal with the big stuff.”
Samuel smiled a little. “At least I’m consistent.”
Mira gave him a short look. “That was not a criticism.”
“I know. But it sounds like I’m a walking magnifying glass.”
Denis did not like where this was going. “Then we shut them down. There must be an emergency reset.”
“The Endless Server is not a microwave, Denis.” Mira pointed at the blue trace. “Every time you try to control Nox by force, his movement gets faster. It is like… like you remind him of what you do most often.”
Right then, Nox jumped over a narrow gap between two ad walls. Denis would have done the same thing. Fast jump, no thinking, no waiting for the team.
The boy clenched his jaw. “So it punishes me for being efficient?”
“No,” Samuel said. “Maybe it just does not know that you can be different too.”
For a moment, offline silence filled the call. It was not the kind when the chat drops out. It was the kind where nobody knows what to say because the words would hit too close.
Suddenly, cyan light appeared at a far corner of the map.
Echo stood under a neon lamp. Its transparent hoodie blended into the background, and its face changed so gently that nobody could tell who it looked like. First it had Denis’s focused stare, then Mira’s raised eyebrow, and after that Samuel’s quiet thinking face.
An Important Moment
“Echo,” Mira said. “Of course.”
The avatar did not answer. It only lifted a hand.
At the same time, Nox raised a hand toward a panel by the road.
Echo lowered its hand.
Nox lowered his too.
Samuel leaned closer to the screen. “It is not copying them. It is testing what they will do.”
“And why won’t it help us?” Denis asked.
Echo turned straight toward the camera, as if it had heard him. Then it pointed at MiraByte. The purple avatar marked another panel with the tag PATTERN. Echo repeated the gesture, but above its hand, a question appeared instead of a tag.
WHY?
Mira went quiet.
Samuel whispered, “Maybe it is learning that copying a move is not the same as understanding it.”
“Or maybe it is waiting to see if we understand it,” Mira added.
At the control node, the gray scratch flashed again. Samuel straightened quickly. It was not a scratch. It was a piece of text appearing between system messages. Only for a split second, every time.
“Stop,” he said. This time louder. “Do not press anything.”
Denis already had his hand above the keyboard, but he froze.
Samuel rewound the record. First, he played the sound from the first log out. Click. Static. A short double beep. Then he played the moment when Denis tried to take control of Nox. Click. Static. Double beep.
On the third replay, he slowed it down.
Between the words Session ended, one letter broke apart. For a moment, the word yes turned into habit.
“See?” Samuel pointed at the screen. “The server is not waiting for us to click log out. It is waiting for us to do what we always do.”
Mira ran her fingers along the edge of her tablet. “That would explain the trace profiles. If Denis tries to control everything alone, the system confirms Nox. If I just collect data, it confirms MiraByte.”
“And if I stay quiet, it confirms SamZero,” Samuel finished.
On the monitor, the white avatar had stopped by another strange reflection on the ground. Then, without a word, it moved after Nox and MiraByte.
Denis let out a slow breath. “So we want to leave the server by stopping ourselves from acting like ourselves?”
“No,” Samuel said. “More like we stop acting only like our fastest versions.”
Mira looked up from the data. “It is a glitch in the rules. Technically, the server holds us by habit. But…”
“But that habit is not all of who we are,” Denis finished.
This time, nobody smiled. It was not a big movie-style reveal. It was just an uncomfortable truth that finally had a name.
They agreed on a simple plan. Denis would not give orders until everyone agreed. Mira would stop chasing every single piece of data and choose only what the team really needed. Samuel would speak up as soon as he noticed something, even if he was not fully sure.
“And what should the avatars do?” Denis asked.
“Maybe they’ll copy us,” Mira said. “So let’s show them something new.”
They connected again to the view of the city. This time they did not follow the avatar running in front. All three watched one map and spoke calmly, even while digital wind hummed in their headphones.
Nox reached the main bridge. It led straight to the goal marked with the yellow triangle. Denis’s fingers almost reached for the controls by themselves.
“Shortest path,” he said automatically.
Then he stopped.
“No. We’ll wait for you.”
The blue avatar stood still.
MiraByte noticed five new marks above the bridge, but Mira did not tag all of them. She looked at them for a moment. One of them pulsed more weakly than the others.
What Comes Next
“This one is not important according to the data,” she said. “It matters because it appeared every time we were together in one place.”
“That is not very scientific,” Denis said.
“Get used to it.”
The purple avatar deleted four tags and kept only one.
SamZero moved last. At the edge of the bridge, he noticed a small mistake in the pavement, one pixel changing from white to blue. Samuel opened his mouth, but his old reflex told him it might be silly. That Denis and Mira were dealing with something bigger.
Even so, he said, “That pixel is an arrow. But it points the other way from the bridge.”
Nox turned. MiraByte turned too. All three avatars walked toward a narrow service corridor under the bridge.
At the logout gate, the light lit up again. This time it was not white. It had a soft cyan shade, like Echo’s glow.
SYSTEM: Change in behavior recorded.
Denis’s heart beat faster. “It works.”
The corridor led them back to the exit platform under the main server tower. Metal floors shone in a rain of digital sparks. Echo stood on a far railing and watched their avatars without moving.
“Why is it coming with us?” Samuel asked.
“Maybe it is not going anywhere,” Mira said. “Maybe it is watching what we do when it has no model to copy.”
A new window opened on the platform. All three held their breath.
SYSTEM: Session may be ended.
Under the message, a LOG OUT button appeared.
Denis looked at Mira and Samuel through the small video call windows. “Together?”
Mira nodded. “Together.”
Samuel smiled. “And without a heroic solo jump.”
They pressed the button at the same time.
The gate opened. Nox, MiraByte, and SamZero paused for a moment inside a circle of light. Their outlines seemed to fade. Denis almost felt the normal air of his room already, and Mira heard someone in the hallway close a door outside the game.
Then all the screens suddenly went black.
From the darkness came the familiar double tone.
After that, red letters lit up.
SYSTEM: Auto-play is now active.
Nox turned sharply away from the gate.
“No,” Denis breathed.
A new map opened in front of the blue avatar. At its end pulsed a golden symbol they knew from the Archive of Lost Voices: a locked core with foreign records. Under it, a task glowed.
GOAL: HAND OVER THE COLLECTED TRACES FOR FULL ACCESS.
Mira went pale. “If Nox finishes that, the server will get our reflexes as a rule. Not just as a record.”
“And it will keep using them,” Samuel added. “Even with Echo.”
Nox stepped toward the golden marker. Fast, exact, with not even one pause.
MiraByte followed him, purple data tags in her hands. SamZero moved after them, but the white mask turned back toward the exit platform, as if he were still trying to find the one pixel that would change everything.
For the first time, Echo moved on the railing. It lifted a hand, but it did not stop them.
It only watched.
And under the main server tower, the three avatars ran into the dark, while the logout gate behind them slowly went out.
To be continued…
