Nebola to katastrofa. Nebola to ani nejaká hrozná fotka. Práve preto ju to zneistilo.
A určite ju neposlala do triedneho chatu sama.
„Čo tam všetci riešite?“ spýtala sa Kaja, keď hodila farebný ruksak na vedľajšiu stoličku.
„Nič,“ povedal niekto zozadu. „Len Sára má novú profilovku.“
Kaja vytiahla mobil a prešla si správy. Hneď sa uchechtla. „No dobre, toto je dosť dobré.“ Pridala reakciu so smejúcou sa tvárou a bez rozmýšľania si sadla.
Nele zostal palec visieť nad obrazovkou. Nemala chuť dať žiadnu reakciu. Zároveň nechcela byť tá jediná, ktorá nič neurobí. V triede sa zatiaľ miešal ranný hluk so zvukmi notifikácií. Každé krátke cinknutie jej znelo nepríjemnejšie než to predchádzajúce.
Potom zazvonilo a učiteľ vošiel dnu s hŕbou papierov.
„To si ty písal?“ zašepkal vedľa neho Martin.
Namiesto toho mobil zhasla.
„Hej.“
Povedal to potichu, bez veľkého výrazu.
„Nie.
Už to videla.“
Nela zdvihla oči. „Fakt?“
„Asi áno.“
Práve vtedy sa dvere triedy otvorili a Filip vyšiel von. Za ním Kaja. Filip držal mobil pred sebou a na obrazovke mal ešte stále otvorený chat.
„Počujte,“ povedal hlasnejšie, aby ho počuli aj ostatní na chodbe, „Denis to chce dať do školského meme účtu. Tam by to malo úspech.“
„Presne.
„No tak,“ povedal Filip, keď si správu prečítal. Nebol nahnevaný. Skôr zaskočený. „Veď som len vtipkoval.“
Nela zdvihla zrak.
„Do toho účtu to teda nedám. Teda… nepôjde to tam.“
„Ty ho tam dávať nemáš,“ ozvala sa Kaja, možno ostrejšie, než chcela. Hneď potom sa zamračila sama na seba. „Myslím, že by tam proste nemal byť.“
Filip prikývol. „Hej.“
O pár minút vošla do triedy Sára.
Bolo to blbé.“
Sára sa na ňu pozrela, ale neodpovedala. Sadla si a vytiahla si učebnicu.
To nebolo veľké zmierenie. Nebol to ani koniec nepríjemného pocitu.
Between Us, part 6: The Photo Without Permission
The Story Begins
Morning in 8.B was never quiet. Someone was looking for a physics notebook, someone else was trying to finish a cocoa before the bell, and by the window two boys were arguing about whether they really had a test today. Nela put her bag under her desk, took out her pencil case, and only then looked at her phone.
In the class chat, nine new messages were waiting. Among them was a photo of Sára from the club meeting yesterday. In the picture, she was standing by the drink machine and bending back at the same time, like she was trying to catch a coin that was falling. Her eyes were half closed, her mouth was open, and her hair was sticking out in strange directions. Maybe even she would have laughed at it.
But under the photo, someone had written: “When you realise you have to answer tomorrow.” Right after that, crying-laughing emojis appeared.
Nela stared at the picture longer than she wanted to. It was not a disaster. It was not even a terrible photo. That was exactly why it made her uneasy. It looked like something easy to pass on, easy to react to, and easy to forget ten minutes later.
The only problem was that Sára was not there when the photo was shared. She had not chosen it. And she definitely had not sent it to the class chat herself.
“What are you all looking at?” Kaja asked when she dropped her colourful backpack onto the chair next to her.
“Nothing,” someone said from the back. “Sára just has a new profile pic.”
Kaja pulled out her phone and checked the messages. She immediately snorted. “Okay, this is pretty good.” She added a laughing reaction and sat down without thinking twice.
Nela kept her thumb above the screen. She did not feel like reacting at all. At the same time, she did not want to be the only one doing nothing. Around her, the morning noise mixed with message alerts. Every small ping sounded worse than the one before.
Then the teacher came in with a stack of papers, and the phones disappeared under desks. Still, the chat went on quietly.
During the first lesson, Nela managed not to look at the screen for about seven minutes. When she finally turned it back on, there were twelve more messages.
Filip had written: “The machine refused to give her juice, so she started calling ghosts.”
Below that came a row of reactions. Even from people who usually stayed quiet. Filip was sitting two desks away, bent over his notebook. On his face was that easy smile he often wore, as if he had just said something that saved a boring lesson.
“Did you write that?” Martin whispered next to him.
Filip only shrugged. “It’s not bad. At least everyone woke up.”
Nela looked down at her notebook. Her head was full of sentences, but none of them sounded normal enough. She could write that it was unfair. She could ask who had even taken the photo. She could send something simple like: leave it alone.
Instead, she turned the phone off.
Between us, things often happened that seemed small until you looked at them closely. One message. One emoji. One silence that pretended to mean nothing.
After the bell, the class spilled into the hallway. Kaja was standing by the notice board with two girls and looking at her phone again.
“Denis says he got the photo from someone at the club,” she said. “So I guess everyone has it.”
“That makes it even better,” Filip replied. “Sára’s famous moment.”
When Things Start to Change
Nela stopped by the vending machine, even though she did not want anything. She heard a few people laughing, then one boy reading out loud a comment that had just been added. It all sounded light. Like they were talking about a failed scene in a video, not about someone who maybe did not even know yet.
Adam was standing by the door, leaning against the wall. His black backpack hung from one shoulder, and he kept his phone in his pocket. Since he had come to the class, he had been able to stay calm in situations where others seemed to need a comment every three seconds.
“Did you see it?” Nela asked him before she had time to think why she was asking him and not someone else.
He nodded. “Yeah.”
“And what do you think?”
Adam looked toward Kaja and Filip. “I think it’s probably not that funny when the person isn’t there.”
He said it quietly, without making a big deal of it. Then he moved away, because a group of younger students walked past them.
Nela wanted to say that she felt exactly the same. Instead, she only nodded. Even that seemed like too little.
At the next break, she sat by the window at the end of the corridor. She took out her notebook with stickers, including a small yellow moon, a faded strawberry, and the words DON’T FORGET. She opened a blank page.
First, she wrote: Sára’s photo in the chat.
She stared at the line for a moment. Then she added: Everyone is laughing because everyone else is laughing.
Her pen stopped above the paper. Behind her, she heard voices from the class. Someone was asking who had already reacted. Another person said Sára was not made of sugar. That sentence hurt Nela somewhere under the ribs, even though she had heard it before. People used it whenever they did not want to think about whether they had hurt someone.
In the end, she wrote one more line: When many people join in, even a tiny thing hurts more.
“Is that homework?” Adam asked when he stopped by the desk near the window.
Nela covered the notebook a little with her hand. “No. I’m just writing.”
“Right.” He did not ask more. That was what was strangely nice about him. After a moment, he added, “Sára is apparently in the corridor by the teachers’ offices. Her cousin texted her. She’s already seen it.”
Nela looked up. “Really?”
“Seems so.”
Just then the classroom door opened and Filip stepped outside. Kaja went after him. Filip held his phone in front of him, and the chat was still open on the screen.
“Listen,” he said louder so the people in the corridor could hear him too, “Denis wants to put it on the school meme account. That would work there.”
A few people turned around at once. One boy gave an approving whistle.
Kaja smiled, but not as freely as she had in the morning. “Maybe that’s a bit too much.”
Filip looked at her. “It’s just a photo.”
“So what?” Tamara said from the windowsill. “It’s funny.”
Filip laughed, short and loud. “Exactly. No need to make a big thing out of it.”
His laugh had a strange effect. Filip was the kind of boy people wanted to laugh with, even when they did not know why. When he laughed, two others joined in almost automatically. Kaja looked at her phone and suddenly seemed unsure what to do with her hands.
Nela felt her cheeks burn. She had the feeling that if she said anything now, everyone would turn toward her. Filip would smirk, and someone would say she was taking it far too seriously. Her mouth was dry.
An Important Moment
Then she remembered the sentence in her notebook.
She went back into the classroom before the others. She sat down, put her phone on the desk, and opened the chat. Her fingers trembled so lightly that nobody would have noticed unless they were looking straight at them.
She typed: “I don’t think this photo is okay. Sára probably didn’t agree to it, and it shouldn’t be shared any further.”
She read the message three times. At first she wanted to erase “I think.” Then she wanted to erase everything. In the end, she pressed send.
The message appeared among the emojis and pictures as if it were nothing special, and that made it even worse. Nobody answered right away.
Students started coming back from the corridor. Kaja sat down in her place, looked at the chat, and froze. Her finger stopped above the reaction she had given in the morning.
“Come on,” Filip said when he read Nela’s message. He was not angry. More surprised than anything else. “I was only joking.”
Nela lifted her head. Her voice shook a little, but she still answered, “I know. But she probably won’t think it’s funny.”
For a moment, there was only the rustle of notebooks. Adam sat down at the desk by the wall and quietly pulled out his pen. He did not say anything, but he looked at Nela in a way that showed he had heard her.
Kaja cleared her throat. “I added that reaction right away. I didn’t even think about it.” Then she tapped the screen, and the smiley next to the photo disappeared. “Done.”
That tiny change was so small it could have been easy to miss. A moment later, Martin removed his reaction too. Then Tamara did the same. Denis did not write anything, but the photo no longer appeared in new messages.
Filip put his phone face down on the desk. The smile disappeared from his face. “Okay,” he said more quietly. “Then I won’t put it on the account. I mean… it won’t go there.”
“You’re not the one who should be putting it there,” Kaja said, maybe sharper than she wanted. Then she frowned at herself. “I mean, it just shouldn’t be there.”
Filip nodded. “Yeah.”
A few minutes later, Sára came into the classroom. She was wearing a grey hoodie, and her hair was tied back in a ponytail. Normally, she would have said hello when she came in, or at least smiled at Tamara. This time, she only walked to her desk, put her bag on the floor, and stayed standing.
“I saw the chat,” she said.
Nobody laughed.
Her voice was not loud. Because of that, it was easy to hear. She looked at Denis’s empty place, then at the others. “You could have at least texted me that it was there.”
Kaja looked down. Filip rubbed his thumb along the edge of the desk. Nela felt relieved that the photo was not spreading anymore, but the relief was not clean. None of it gave Sára back the morning when people had laughed about her without her.
“I… ” Kaja started. She stopped. For the second time, she did not choose a fast joke. “I joined in. That was stupid.”
Sára looked at her, but did not answer. She sat down and took out her textbook.
That was not some big reconciliation. It was not even the end of the bad feeling. The tension stayed between the desks like a forgotten note nobody wanted to pick up. Still, when Denis came into the classroom later, opened the chat, looked at Nela’s messages for a moment, and then deleted the photo.
What Comes Next
After the last lesson, Nela stayed seated for a while on her own. The class slowly emptied. Outside the window, a car drove past, and in the corridor someone slammed a door.
She opened her notebook on the page with the morning notes. Under them, she wrote a new sentence.
“A like is not an apology.”
She closed the notebook, put it into her bag, and only then noticed that Adam was standing by the door.
“Are you coming?” he asked.
Nela nodded. “Yeah.”
When they stepped into the corridor, the class chat was unusually quiet. Not empty. Just quiet in a way that made it possible, for the first time, to hear the things that were missing from it.
To be continued…
