The Forest of Little Lights, Part 8: Light in a Dewdrop
Lily and Glimmer discover that kindness, care, and even a tiny dewdrop can bring light to the forest.

The Forest of Little Lights, Part 8: Light in a Dewdrop
The Story Begins
Morning in the Forest of Little Lights was quiet and soft. Dew still clung to the leaves, and tiny drops sparkled on the path like little pearls. Lily walked slowly so she would not scare even one away. She wore a soft green raincoat, tiny yellow boots, and a leaf-shaped bag at her side. The air smelled of grass and the fresh forest.
“Oh, what a beautiful morning,” Lily whispered. “Everything shines as if by magic.”
Glimmer fluttered beside her. His tiny round body glowed with warm golden light, but today it seemed a little weaker. He wore his little leaf hat and had a surprised look on his face.
“That is strange,” he said. “My light is usually happier in the morning. Why is it hiding today?”
Little lanterns stood by the path. Instead of shining brightly, they only flickered softly. The forest seemed sleepy, as if it did not quite want to wake up yet.
Lily stopped and looked at the wet ground. “Maybe the dew is bothering them a little,” she said quietly.
Glimmer leaned closer to the grass. Suddenly, he noticed something lovely. In the dew drops on a blade of grass, his light was reflected like in tiny mirrors.
“Look!” he cried. “I can see myself there!”
Lily bent down to a clump of grass. A drop trembled, and a small golden glimmer appeared inside it. Then she moved to a leaf. There, too, the light sparkled, soft and gentle.
“Dewdrops are like little mirrors,” she said with a smile. “They show the light when you look at them closely.”
Together, they knelt by the path. First they looked from the left, then from the right. Later, they bent even lower. Dew was everywhere, but it was not the same everywhere. Where the grass was only a little wet, the reflection sparkled beautifully. Where the ground was very wet, it seemed to disappear.
“So it is not only about something shining,” Glimmer said thoughtfully. “You also have to look at what is around it.”
“Exactly,” Lily nodded. “When we tidy something and take care of it, it shows better.”
Just then, a soft breeze blew, and a few leaves slid onto the path. Tiny twigs and a few little stones lay beside them. Water stayed caught among them for longer, so some places were too wet.
“Let’s help,” Lily suggested.
They began to work quietly and carefully. Lily picked up a small leaf and placed it to one side. Glimmer pushed a twig all the way to the edge of the path. Then they moved a few stones aside together, making a small dry patch on the path. It was not a great spell. It was simply careful help, but it was very lovely.
“I thought I only needed to glow more brightly,” Glimmer admitted. “But all I had to do was help the path.”
Lily laughed. “Sometimes it is enough to tidy the little things.”
After a while, the water at the wet edge of the path began to drain away, and the dry patch showed clearly. The lanterns by the path immediately glowed a little brighter. Not fiercely or loudly, but gently and contentedly. The forest no longer seemed sleepy. It was calm and awake.
Meanwhile, something began to move beneath a nearby bush. Small forest creatures peeped out of the grass. They were tiny, soft, and wet with dew. One had a little leaf on its head, while another wore a small acorn like a hat. They all looked as if they were searching for a dry, comfortable place to rest.
“Hello,” Lily said gently. “Are you looking for a dry little spot?”
When Things Start to Change
The little creatures nodded. One gave a tiny wag of its tail, and another curled up closer to the moss.
Glimmer shone with warm golden light. This time he glowed cheerfully, but very softly, so that he would not frighten anyone. “Come here,” he said kindly. “There is a nice dry place by the moss.”
Lily led them to a small patch of soft moss beneath the bush. It was dry and cosy there. She placed a few dry leaves beside them so they could sit comfortably. One tiny creature settled down at once, another brushed off its whiskers, and a third happily flopped onto the soft moss.
“Thank you,” whispered the tiny visitors.
At that moment, Glimmer shone even more brightly. His warm little light caressed the space around him, and the lanterns by the path gleamed more brightly, as if they were pleased that someone had helped.
“I feel somehow lighter,” Glimmer said, smiling from ear to ear. “When I helped someone, my light grew brighter all by itself.”
Lily looked at him and at the little creatures beneath the bush. She felt that he was right. The help had been small, but the joy it brought was great.
At last, Grandma Little appeared at the edge of the forest. Her grey hair was braided, and she wore a blue knitted shawl around her shoulders. She carried pinecones in her basket and walked slowly but surely. When she saw the tidy path and the happy little lights, she smiled at once.
“Well, well,” she said softly. “I see that you found the light today.”
Lily nodded. “Was it in the dewdrops?”
Grandma Little laughed and sat down on a stump beside the path. “There too. But light hides in other places as well. In a lantern, in a helping hand, and sometimes in the eyes of someone who cares for little things.”
Then she asked a simple riddle: “Where does light hide? In a tiny flame, in a kind hand, or in a dewdrop?”
Glimmer thought for a moment. Lily smiled and looked at the shining grass. “Perhaps it is everywhere there is kindness,” she said.
“That is right,” Grandma Little nodded. “And when someone cares for a path, a friend, or a tired little creature, the light shows itself even more beautifully.”
The forest was fully awake now. The lanterns shone more brightly. The little creatures beneath the bush rested, dry and content. Dew on the grass sparkled like a hundred tiny stars.
When Lily and Glimmer set off back home, they both felt calm and happy. The path seemed more beautiful than before. And when they looked back once more, the lanterns gleamed as if saying goodbye.
Beyond the quiet forest brook, a few small reflections appeared for a moment. They were so tiny that they looked like silver winks on the water. Lily noticed them for only an instant.
“Who sparkled so beautifully over there?” she asked softly.
Glimmer tilted his head. His eyes shone with curiosity. “Maybe something is waiting there,” he whispered. “And perhaps another secret will welcome us there one day.”
And so they returned home feeling that even a little care can light up the whole forest.
