Nebude tam nuda?“
„No tak, poďte dnu,“ pobádal ich dedko.
To je ďateľ. A tam, tie malé odtlačky? To je veverička.“
Samko a Terezka boli očarení. Nikdy predtým nevideli toľko rôznych druhov rastlín a živočíchov.
„Dedko,“ povedala Terezka, keď sa vracali domov, „prečo si nám nikdy predtým neukázal všetky tieto úžasné veci?“
Dedko sa usmial. „Pretože ste nikdy predtým neboli pripravení ich vidieť.“
Sammy and Theresa: A Holiday Adventure in the countryside, part 1 of 3.
796 words / 4.5 minutes
In a bustling city where cars raced through the streets and tall buildings reached for the sky, lived siblings Samko and Terezka. Samko, a ten-year-old boy with curly brown hair and curious green eyes, was always full of energy and loved playing on his tablet. His younger sister Terezka, a nine-year-old girl with long blonde braids and cheerful blue eyes, loved watching videos on her phone and chatting with friends.
One day, as summer vacation approached, their parents announced surprising news.
„Samko, Terezka,“ Mom said with a smile, „this year you’ll spend two weeks of your vacation with Grandpa Joseph in the countryside!“
The children looked at each other with a mixture of surprise and concern. They had only seen Grandpa Joseph a few times in their lives and only knew that he lived somewhere in a secluded area near the forest.
„But Mom,“ Terezka objected, „what will we do for two whole weeks in the village? Won’t it be boring?“
„And will there at least be Wi-Fi?“ Samko added.
The parents laughed. „It will be a new experience for you,“ Dad said. „Grandpa Joseph will teach you many interesting things about nature and life in the countryside.“
Although they weren’t excited, Samko and Terezka had no choice. A week later, they were already in the car, watching as the city panorama changed into the green countryside landscape.
After a long journey, the car finally stopped in front of an old wooden house surrounded by tall trees. Grandpa Joseph stood in front of the house – a tall man with a white mustache and a wrinkled but friendly face. He wore faded blue overalls and a checkered shirt.
„Welcome, welcome!“ Grandpa called out with a smile. „I’m so glad you’ve come!“
Samko and Terezka got out of the car and looked around uncertainly. There was only nature all around – tall grass, trees, and in the distance, the outlines of mountains.
„Come on, come inside,“ Grandpa urged them. „I’ll show you your new home for the next two weeks.“
The house was cozy inside, but Samko and Terezka immediately noticed that many things they were used to were missing – no television, no computer, not even a Wi-Fi router in sight.
„Grandpa,“ Samko asked cautiously, „where’s your internet?“
Grandpa laughed. „Internet? What would I need that for? We have much more interesting things to do and enjoy here!“
Samko and Terezka exchanged horrified looks. These would surely be the longest holidays of their lives.
The first two days were really hard for Samko and Terezka. They felt like fish out of water. They constantly checked their phones, but the signal was weak and the internet barely worked.
„What are we going to do?“ Terezka sighed, lying on the bed in the attic room.
„I don’t know,“ Samko replied, trying in vain to load a game on his tablet. „But we have to think of something, or we’ll die of boredom here.“
However, Grandpa Joseph had other plans. On the third day, he woke them up before sunrise.
„Get up, you lazy bones!“ he called cheerfully. „We have a lot of work to do today!“
Samko and Terezka reluctantly climbed out of their beds and followed Grandpa outside. A surprise awaited them outside – Grandpa was holding two small goat kids.
„This is Whiskers and Star,“ Grandpa introduced them. „You’ll be taking care of them.“
The children didn’t want to at first, but when Grandpa showed them how to feed and pet the goat kids, they suddenly found it was actually fun. Terezka even laughed when Star licked her hand.
„You see?“ Grandpa smiled. „And this is just the beginning!“
In the following days, Grandpa Joseph gradually revealed to the children the beauties of country life. He taught them how to care for animals, how to grow vegetables in the garden, and even showed them how to bake homemade bread.
Samko was fascinated when Grandpa showed him how to repair an old tractor. „Wow, Grandpa!“ he exclaimed excitedly. „You’re like some kind of wizard!“
Terezka, on the other hand, discovered the joy of baking. With Grandpa’s help, she baked her first apple pie and was immensely proud of it.
Gradually, the children forgot about their phones and tablets. Instead, they spent time outside, exploring the surroundings and learning new things.
One day, Grandpa took them for a walk in the forest.
„Look,“ he pointed to a tree, „do you see those marks? That’s a woodpecker. And there, those small prints? That’s a squirrel.“
Samko and Terezka were enchanted. They had never seen so many different types of plants and animals before.
„Grandpa,“ Terezka said as they were returning home, „why didn’t you ever show us all these amazing things before?“
Grandpa smiled. „Because you were never ready to see them before.“
