Mapa v prachu: Prachový odtlačok v skrinke
Ela a Tomáš stáli ešte chvíľu pri skrinke číslo 17. Bola otvorená len na maličkú škáru a z vnútra sa na nich pozeralo slabé svetlo chodby. Vzduch voňal po starom dreve a niečom prašnom, čo sa držalo v starej škole už veľmi dlho.
„Ešte raz sa pozrime dnu,“ povedala Ela a pritlačila si k hrudi svoj malý zošit. Jej zelené oči sa zúžili od sústredenia. „Možno sme si ten papier všimli len narýchlo.“
Tomáš prikývol. Na chrbte cítil sivý batoh a v hlave mu stále vírila myšlienka na kľúč z prvej epizódy. Bez neho by sa ku skrinke číslo 17 asi vôbec nedostali. Preto sa teraz správal opatrne, akoby sa báli vyplašiť aj samotné tajomstvo.
Zrolovaný papier ležal na dne skrinky ako malá svetlá rúčka. Keď ho Ela jemne vytiahla, na okraji zostala tenká stopa prachu. Bola taká jemná, že by ju dospelý možno prehliadol. Deti si ju však všimli hneď.
„Pozri,“ zašepkal Tomáš. „Ten prach je sivý a trochu červený. Akoby papier niekto položil niekde pri starej stene.“
Ela otvorila zošit a zapísala si: papier, zvláštne značky, prach zo starej chodby. Potom si papier položila na dlaň, ale neotvorila ho. Najprv si ho len prezerali z oboch strán.
Na papieri neboli obyčajné vety. Namiesto slov tam boli malé čiarky, krúžky a znaky, ktoré sa podobali na písmená, no neboli to písmená. Pri jednom mieste sa črtal malý symbol sovy.
Značky, ktoré ukazujú ďalej
„To som už niekde videl,“ zamrmlal Tomáš a priklonil sa bližšie. „Možno na tej lavičke pri okne… alebo na dverách do starej časti školy.“
Ela sa zamyslela. „A možno aj na kľúči,“ pripomenula mu ticho. Kľúč z prvej epizódy mal totiž na sebe drobný znak, ktorý si vtedy obaja zapamätali. Teraz sa ten znak znovu objavil, hoci len maličký a načrtnutý do prachu.
Kamarátka rozprestrela papier na lavičke pri skrinkách. Medzitým si Tomáš sadol vedľa nej a opatrne si založil ruky na kolená. Chcel rozmýšľať, nie hádať naslepo.
„Pozri sa sem,“ povedala Ela a ukázala na prvý znak. „Toto vyzerá ako sova. A toto vedľa nej je možno číslo.“
„Alebo šípka,“ namietol Tomáš.
„Alebo oboje,“ usmiala sa.
Deti si značky prezerali jeden po druhom. Niektoré boli len čiarky, iné malé oblúky. Na konci papiera bol dokonca slabý odtlačok, akoby ho niekto pritlačil na niečo tvrdé a drsné. Chlapec nadvihol papier proti svetlu a oči sa mu rozžiarili.
„Počkaj,“ povedal. „Tu je niečo vidieť!“
Ela sa naklonila bližšie. Na povrchu sa objavila veľmi slabá kresba, takmer neviditeľná. Vyzerala ako kus mapy. Nebola celá, len malý výrez. Ale aj to stačilo, aby si obaja uvedomili, že papier nie je len náhodná stará poznámka.
„Takže to je stopa,“ zašepkala Ela vzrušene. „Nie niečo, čo niekto len stratil.“
Tomáš si podoprel bradu. „Ak je to mapa, potom tie znaky hovoria, kam ísť ďalej.“
Tichá cesta do starej časti školy
Na chvíľu obaja stíchli. V školskom dvore bolo počuť iba vzdialený hlas detí a klopanie topánok niekde na schodoch. Staré steny chodby však zostávali tiché. Tá tichosť bola zvláštna. Nie strašidelná. Skôr taká, akoby si budova pamätala všetko, čo sa v nej kedysi stalo.
„Musíme nájsť miesto, odkiaľ sa ten prach mohol dostať,“ rozhodla Ela. „Ak je na papieri prach zo starej chodby, možno tam papier niekto nosil.“
„Alebo tam niečo ukrýval,“ dodal Tomáš.
Obaja sa postavili. Papier zložili veľmi opatrne a Ela si ho vložila do vrecka žltej bundy. Potom sa vydali smerom k starej časti školy. Chodba sa postupne menila. Steny mali iný odtieň, okná boli vyššie a svetlo cez ne dopadalo mäkšie. Krok po kroku sa z bežnej školskej chodby stával tichší, starší priestor.
„Tu som ešte nikdy nebol,“ priznal Tomáš polohlasom.
„Ani ja nie často,“ odvetila Ela. Napriek tomu kráčala smelo, hoci pomalšie než zvyčajne.
V starej časti školy bolo všetko pokojné. Na stenách viseli staré nástenky a na podlahe sa leskol jemný prach, ktorý sa dvíhal len trochu pri každom kroku. Práve vtedy Ela zbadala niečo zvláštne na jednej zo stien.
„Tomáš… pozri sa tam.“
Na prvý pohľad to vyzeralo ako obyčajná stará omietka. Ale keď sa na to človek zadíval dlhšie, všimol si, že jedna časť steny je akoby hladšia než ostatné miesto. Bola tam tenká, vyblednutá čiara. Dievča pomaly prstom prešlo po povrchu.
Karol a stopa Klubu Sovy
Zrazu sa pod jej dotykom ukázalo niečo svetlejšie. V prachu a vrstve starého náteru sa začali črtať malé línie. Najprv jedna, potom druhá, a napokon celá drobná schéma. Bola to mapka miest v škole.
Tomáš zalapal po dychu. „To je ono!“
Ela sa usmiala, no hneď sa zase sústredila. Mapka nebola veľká. Ukazovala len niekoľko chodieb, dvere, schody a jedno miesto v starej časti budovy, ktoré bolo označené zvláštnym symbolom sovy. Vedľa neho bolo malé číslo. Nebolo však celkom jasné, či ide o jednotku, trojku alebo možno sedmičku. Znak bol trochu vyblednutý a prach sa na ňom držal ako tenký závoj.
„Vidíš to číslo?“ spýtala sa Ela.
„Áno,“ odpovedal Tomáš. „Ale neviem presne, čo znamená.“
Skôr než stihli rozmýšľať ďalej, začuli kroky. Neboli rýchle ani zlostné. Boli pokojné a pomalé. Deti sa na seba pozreli.
„Niekto ide,“ zašepkal Tomáš.
Ela si priložila prst na pery. „Ticho.“
O chvíľu sa pri nich objavil školník Karol. Na sebe mal zelenú pracovnú bundu, vlasy mal sivé a v tvári pokojný výraz. Jeho oči pôsobili unavene, ale milo. Akoby už dávno vedel, že tu deti niečo hľadajú.
„Tak predsa ste našli tú mapku,“ povedal ticho.
Tomáš trochu cúvol, ale Karol sa len jemne usmial. „Nebojte sa. Tu je všetko v poriadku.“
Ela sa naňho pozrela s otázkou v očiach. „Vedeli ste o nej?“
„Vedeli,“ odpovedal školník. „Staré steny niekedy ukrývajú viac, než si človek myslí. A stará škola má svoju pamäť.“
Nové miesto na mape
Chvíľu bolo ticho. Potom Karol ukázal na symbol sovy na stene. „Toto patrilo Klubu Sovy. Kedysi sa tu stretávali deti potichu, najmä keď chceli niečo zapísať, ukryť alebo si odovzdať odkaz. Nechceli robiť hluk. Preto používali značky, ktoré poznali len oni.“
„Takže tie čiariky na papieri sú ako odkaz?“ spýtala sa Ela.
Karol prikývol. „Áno. Niektoré ukazovali smer. Iné znamenali, že niekto už miesto našiel. A to malé číslo pri sovom symbole…“ na chvíľu sa odmlčal, „…mohlo ukazovať, ktorý vchod alebo ktoré dvere treba hľadať.“
Tomáš si rýchlo zapamätal každý detail. „A to nové miesto na mape?“
Školník zdvihol ruku a ukázal na nenápadný kút starej schémy. „Tam. Je to miesto, kam bežne nikto nechodí. Ale nie je nebezpečné. Len tiché. A práve preto ho mali radi.“
Ela si mapu prekreslila do zošita, aby ju nestratila. Jej ceruzka šuchotala po papieri a tvár mala veľmi sústredenú. Tomáš si medzitým v hlave opakoval tvar sovy aj drobného čísla. Vedel, že ak to teraz zabudne, ďalšia stopa sa mu môže stratiť.
„Môžeme tam ísť hneď?“ spýtal sa opatrne.
Karol sa pousmial. „Radšej nie teraz. Počkajte, kým bude chodba prázdnejšia. Potom sa tam môžete pozrieť spolu a v pokoji. Najlepšie je neponáhľať sa, keď ide o staré tajomstvá.“
Tá veta znela jednoducho, ale deti si ju zapamätali. Nie preto, že by im prikazovala, čo majú robiť. Skôr preto, že znela pravdivo.
Posledná stopa
Napokon sa Ela pozrela ešte raz na stenu. Vyblednutá mapka tam zostávala, tichá a trpezlivá. Už nevyzerala ako náhoda. Bola to cesta. Možno malá, ale predsa dôležitá.
„Ďakujeme,“ povedala školníkovi.
„Rado sa stalo,“ odvetil Karol a mierne kývol hlavou. „A sledujte ten znak. Niekedy rozhoduje práve maličkosť.“
Deti sa otočili a vydali späť ku svetlejšej chodbe. Cítili sa o trochu pokojnejšie než predtým, ale zároveň aj napínavo. Mala to byť len obyčajná kontrola skrinky číslo 17. A predsa teraz niesli v zošite prekreslenú mapu a v hlave nový plán.
Keď už boli skoro pri schodoch, Ela sa ešte raz zastavila. Niečo jej nepasovalo. Vytiahla papier s odkazom a znovu sa pozrela na sovu. Pri symbole sa naozaj skrývalo malé číslo, ktoré si predtým nevšimla.
„Tomáš,“ zašepkala. „To číslo je tam ešte raz. Pozri.“
Chlapec sa naklonil nad papier. Tentoraz bolo číslo jasnejšie, akoby sa po ňom práve prešla tichá iskra svetla. Mohlo ukazovať presné dvere. Alebo ďalší roh chodby. Alebo niečo ukryté hneď vedľa miestnosti, kam sa ešte nedostali.
Tomáš sa pomaly usmial. „Takže to ešte nie je koniec.“
Ela zavrela zošit a pritlačila ho k hrudi. „Nie. Len začiatok ďalšej stopy.“
A keď spolu vyšli zo starej časti školy, mali pocit, že sa im škola pozerá za chrbtom svojím tichým, starým spôsobom. Nehovorila nič nahlas. Len čakala, kým sa deti vrátia a objavia, kam vedie malé číslo pri sovom symbole.

Secrets of the Old School, part 3: The Map in the Dust
The Dusty Trace in the Locker
Ella and Thomas stood for a little while longer near locker number 17. It was open only a tiny crack, and faint hallway light shone from inside. The air smelled of old wood and of something dusty that had stayed in the old school for a very long time.
“Let’s look inside once more,” Ella said, pressing her small notebook to her chest. Her green eyes narrowed with focus. “Maybe we only saw the paper for a second.”
Thomas nodded. His grey backpack rested on his back, and in his head the thought of the key from the first episode still spun around. Without it, they probably would not have reached locker number 17 at all. Because of that, he moved carefully now, as if they were afraid to wake the secret itself.
The rolled paper lay at the bottom of the locker like a small pale hand. When Ella gently pulled it out, a thin line of dust stayed on the edge. It was so light that an adult might have missed it. But the children noticed it at once.
“Look,” Thomas whispered. “That dust is grey and a little red. It’s like the paper was kept near an old wall.”
Ella opened her notebook and wrote down: paper, strange marks, dust from the old corridor. Then she held the paper in her palm, but she did not open it yet. First, they only looked at it from both sides.
Marks That Point Further
There were no normal sentences on the paper. Instead, there were small lines, circles, and signs that looked like letters but were not letters. Near one place, a small owl symbol could be seen.
“I’ve seen that before,” Thomas mumbled and leaned closer. “Maybe on that bench by the window… or on the door to the old part of the school.”
Ella thought for a moment. “And maybe on the key too,” she said softly. The key from the first episode had a tiny sign on it, and both of them had remembered it then. Now that same sign appeared again, even if only a little and drawn in dust.
The girl spread the paper on the bench near the lockers. Meanwhile, Thomas sat down beside her and folded his hands carefully on his knees. He wanted to think, not guess wildly.
“Look here,” Ella said, pointing to the first sign. “This looks like an owl. And this one next to it may be a number.”
“Or an arrow,” Thomas said.
“Or both,” she smiled.
The children studied the marks one by one. Some were only lines, others were small curves. At the end of the paper, there was even a faint print, as if someone had pressed it against something hard and rough. The boy lifted the paper toward the light, and his eyes brightened.
The Quiet Way to the Old Part of the School
“Wait,” he said. “There’s something here!”
Ella leaned closer. On the surface, a very weak drawing appeared, almost invisible. It looked like a piece of a map. It was not complete, only a small part. But that was enough for both of them to understand that the paper was not just some old note.
“So this is a clue,” Ella whispered, excited. “Not something someone just lost.”
Thomas rested his chin in his hand. “If it’s a map, then those signs tell us where to go next.”
For a moment, both of them were quiet. In the school yard, they could hear only a distant voice of children and the sound of shoes on stairs somewhere. But the old walls of the corridor stayed silent. That silence was strange. Not scary. More like the building remembered everything that had once happened there.
“We need to find the place where the dust could have come from,” Ella decided. “If there is old hallway dust on the paper, maybe someone carried it there.”
“Or hid something there,” Thomas added.
They both stood up. They folded the paper very carefully, and Ella put it into the pocket of her yellow jacket. Then they walked toward the old part of the school. The corridor slowly changed. The walls had a different color, the windows were higher, and the light through them felt softer. Step by step, the normal school hallway became a quieter, older place.
Karl and the Owl Club Trail
“I’ve never been here before,” Thomas admitted in a low voice.
“Neither have I, not often,” Ella answered. Still, she walked bravely, even if more slowly than usual.
In the old part of the school, everything was calm. Old notice boards hung on the walls, and fine dust shone on the floor, rising only a little with each step. Just then, Ella noticed something strange on one wall.
“Thomas… look over there.”
At first, it looked like ordinary old plaster. But when you looked longer, you could see that one part of the wall was smoother than the rest. There was a thin, faded line there. The girl slowly ran a finger over the surface.
Suddenly, something lighter appeared under her touch. In the dust and the old paint, small lines began to show. First one, then another, and finally a tiny shape. It was a map of places in the school.
Thomas gasped. “That’s it!”
Ella smiled, but then she focused again right away. The map was not big. It showed only a few corridors, doors, stairs, and one place in the old part of the building marked with a strange owl symbol. Next to it was a small number. But it was not fully clear whether it was one, three, or maybe seven. The sign was a little faded, and dust rested on it like a thin veil.
The New Place on the Map
“Do you see that number?” Ella asked.
“Yes,” Thomas replied. “But I don’t know exactly what it means.”
Before they could think more, they heard footsteps. They were not quick or angry. They were calm and slow. The children looked at each other.
“Someone’s coming,” Thomas whispered.
Ella put a finger to her lips. “Quiet.”
After a moment, Caretaker Karl appeared beside them. He wore a green work jacket, had grey hair, and his face was calm. His eyes looked tired, but kind. It was as if he had known for a long time that children were searching for something there.
“So you found the little map after all,” he said quietly.
Thomas stepped back a little, but Karl only gave a gentle smile. “Don’t worry. Everything is fine here.”
Ella looked at him with a question in her eyes. “You knew about it?”
“I did,” the caretaker answered. “Old walls sometimes hide more than people think. And the old school has its own memory.”
For a while, there was silence. Then Karl pointed at the owl symbol on the wall. “This belonged to the Owl Club. A long time ago, children met here quietly, especially when they wanted to write something down, hide something, or pass on a message. They did not want to make noise. So they used signs that only they understood.”
The Last Clue
“So the little lines on the paper are like a message?” Ella asked.
Karl nodded. “Yes. Some showed direction. Others meant that someone had already found the place. And the small number near the owl sign…” He paused for a moment. “…it may show which entrance or which door to look for.”
Thomas quickly remembered every detail. “And the new place on the map?”
The caretaker raised his hand and pointed to a quiet corner of the old plan. “There. It’s a place that people do not usually go to. But it is not dangerous. Just quiet. And that is exactly why they liked it.”
Ella copied the map into her notebook so she would not lose it. Her pencil scratched softly on the page, and her face was very serious with concentration. Meanwhile, Thomas repeated the owl shape and the small number in his head. He knew that if he forgot them now, the next clue might slip away.
“Can we go there right away?” he asked carefully.
Karl gave a small smile. “Not now. Wait until the corridor is emptier. Then you can look there together and in peace. It is best not to hurry when old secrets are involved.”
The sentence sounded simple, but the children remembered it. Not because it told them what to do. More because it sounded true.
The Last Clue
At last, Ella looked once more at the wall. The faded map stayed there, quiet and patient. It no longer looked like an accident. It was a path. Maybe a small one, but an important one.
“Thank you,” she said to the caretaker.
“You’re welcome,” Karl replied, and gave a slight nod. “And keep an eye on that sign. Sometimes the smallest thing matters most.”
The children turned and walked back toward the brighter corridor. They felt a little calmer than before, but also excited. It was supposed to be only a simple check of locker number 17. And yet now they carried a copied map in Ella’s notebook and a new plan in their minds.
When they were almost at the stairs, Ella stopped again. Something did not feel quite right. She took out the paper with the message and looked again at the owl. Near the sign, there really was a small number she had not noticed before.
“Thomas,” she whispered. “The number is there again. Look.”
The boy bent over the paper. This time the number was clearer, as if a quiet spark of light had just passed over it. It might show the exact door. Or another corner of the corridor. Or something hidden right next to the room they had not reached yet.
The Last Clue
Thomas smiled slowly. “So this is not the end.”
Ella closed her notebook and pressed it to her chest. “No. Just the start of the next clue.”
And when they walked out of the old part of the school together, they had the feeling that the school was watching them from behind in its quiet, old way. It said nothing out loud. It only waited for the children to come back and find out where the small number near the owl sign led.
