Po vyučovaní bolo v starej škole nezvyčajne ticho. Len niekde v diaľke bolo počuť tlmené klopanie a slabé šuchotanie metly. Ela stála pri okne v triede, v ruke držala malý zápisník a premýšľala nad starým mosadzným kľúčom.

„Myslíš, že naozaj niekam patrí?“ spýtala sa potichu.

Tomáš si prehodil svoj sivý batoh na druhé plece a prikývol. „Musí. Kľúče sa predsa len tak nestrácajú. Niekto ho schoval schválne.“

Ela si do zápisníka napísala dve slová: telocvičňa a staré skrinky. Potom zdvihla hlavu. „Spomínaš si, že pri telocvični je stará časť budovy? Tam už chodia len učitelia a školník Karol.“

Tomáš sa zamyslel. Jeho hnedé oči sa rozžiarili. „Áno! Sú tam tie kovové skrinky. Niektoré sú také staré, že majú skoro zodraté čísla.“

Ela sa usmiala. „Tak poďme sa tam pozrieť. Ale potichu.“

„Veľmi potichu,“ súhlasil Tomáš.

Obaja vyšli na chodbu. Po stenách viseli staré výkresy, na oknách sa ligotalo neskoré popoludňajšie svetlo a škola pôsobila pokojne, akoby si aj ona sama nechávala svoje tajomstvá pre seba. Ela kráčala prvá, ale len o malý krok. Tomáš ju nasledoval a občas sa rozhliadol, či ich niekto nevidí.

Pri telocvični bolo chladnejšie než v triedach. V rohu chodby stála lavička a za ňou sa naozaj ukrývala stará kovová skrinka. Bola zaprášená, mierne oškretá a vyzerala, akoby sa jej už dlho nikto nedotkol. Na malých dvierkach bolo sotva viditeľné číslo.

Ela si prikrčila kolená a naklonila sa bližšie. „Pozri,“ zašepkala. „Sedemnásť.“

Tomáš sa narovnal. „Skrinka číslo 17.“

Obaja sa na chvíľu len dívali. Číslo bolo také vyblednuté, že keby si ho Ela nevšimla, možno by ho už nevideli. Skrinka pôsobila, akoby tu stála odjakživa.

Tomáš opatrne prešiel pohľadom po chodbe. „Nikto sa nepozerá.“

Ela prikývla a vytiahla z vrecka starý mosadzný kľúč. Mal jemný lesk a bol trošku studený. Podala ho Tomášovi, ale ten ju zastavil.

„Ty ho skús,“ povedal. „Ty si prišla s nápadom.“

Ela sa naňho prekvapene pozrela. Potom sa usmiala. „Dobre.“

Najprv sa snažila nájsť zámok. Kľúčová dierka bola ukrytá pod tenkou vrstvou prachu. Ela ju jemne utrela rukávom žltej bundy. Potom zasunula kľúč dnu.

Nič.

„Možno je malý,“ zašepkala.

Tomáš si kľakol vedľa nej. „Počkaj, ja pridržím dvierka. Skús ho trochu pootočiť.“

Ela sa zhlboka nadýchla a urobila presne to. Kľúč sa najprv nepohol. Potom sa ozvalo slabé, takmer nepočuteľné cvaknutie.

Obaja stuhli.

„Počul si to?“ vyhŕkla Ela.

Tomáš sa usmial. „Počul. Funguje!“

Skrinka sa však neotvorila hneď. Bola akoby prilepená časom. Tomáš ju pridržal oboma rukami a Ela jemne potiahla za úchyt. Dvierka sa po chvíli pomaly pohli a so slabým škrípnutím sa otvorili.

Vo vnútri nebolo nič veľké. Len malý predmet zabalený do kúska zažltnutého papiera.

Ela ani nedýchala. „Tak preto bola tak dlho zamknutá.“

Tomáš sa naklonil bližšie. „Niekto to sem schoval veľmi opatrne.“

Ela opatrne vytiahla balíček von. Papier bol tenký a na dotyk trochu krehký, ale držal. Rozložila ho na dlani a pod ním sa zablyslo niečo drobné a kovové.

Bol to malý predmet v tvare sovy.

Nie veľká ozdoba, skôr drobný kovový odznak alebo prívesok. Na chrbte mal vytlačený znak, ktorý Ela nepoznala. Tomáš ho vzal do ruky len na chvíľku a hneď ho otočil naspäť.

„Sova,“ povedal potichu.

Ela prikývla. „Ako ten symbol, ktorý sme už videli.“

V tej chvíli sa z chodby ozvali kroky. Obaja rýchlo stuhli. Ela schovala papierik aj sovu do zápisníka a Tomáš rýchlo zavrel skrinku napoly. Z rohu však vyšiel len školník Karol s metlou v ruke. Mal sivé vlasy, zelenú pracovnú bundu a pokojný výraz, ako vždy. Jeho unavené oči sa na nich na chvíľu zastavili.

„Aha,“ povedal ticho. „Tak predsa ste ju našli.“

Ela a Tomáš sa na seba pozreli.

Keď sa veci začnú meniť

„Vy ste vedeli, že tu je?“ spýtal sa Tomáš opatrne.

Karol sa len mierne usmial. „Vedieť je silné slovo. Ale o tejto časti školy viem dosť. A o niektorých skrinkách tiež.“

Ela pristúpila o krok bližšie. „Táto bola zamknutá veľmi dlho. Prečo?“

Karol sa oprel o metlu a pozrel smerom k telocvični, akoby si spomínal na niečo veľmi dávne. „V starej škole sa kedysi nechávali odkazy na miestach, ktoré si nikto nevšímal. Skrinky, poličky, krabice. Niekto mal rád poriadok, ale aj tajomstvá.“

Tomáš sa zamračil. „Takže niekto ju schválne nechal nepoužívanú?“

„Možno áno,“ odpovedal Karol. „Ale možno ju jednoducho niekto dlho nikomu neukázal.“

Ela si prežula spodnú peru. „A tá sova?“

Karol sa usmial trochu viac, ale stále nepovedal všetko. „Sovy vidia v tme lepšie než iné vtáky. Niekedy aj ľudia potrebujú takýto znak, aby vedeli, kam ísť ďalej.“

Tomáš sa zamyslel. „To znamená, že je tu ešte ďalšia stopa.“

„To už zistíte sami,“ povedal Karol a jemne pokývol hlavou. „Len buďte opatrní. Stará škola má rada ticho. A nie všetko treba zistiť naraz.“

Ela si všimla, že na zadnej strane malej sovy je niečo vyryté. Nie čísla, ale tenká čiara, ako smerovník. Rýchlo si to zaznamenala do zápisníka. Tomáš sa pozrel cez jej plece.

„Vyzerá to ako šípka,“ povedal.

„Alebo chodba,“ pridala Ela.

„Alebo mapa,“ dodal Tomáš.

Na malú chvíľu sa opäť začali predbiehať v nápadoch. Potom sa zastavili. Ela sa pozrela na Tomáša a usmiala sa. „Počkajme. Radšej si to pozrieme spolu.“

Tomáš prikývol. „Áno. Tentoraz sa nebudeme prekrikovať.“

Karol ich počul a spokojne prikývol. „To je dobrý začiatok.“

Deti si odniesli nález o kúsok ďalej k oknu, kde bolo viac svetla. Ela vybrala sovu zo zápisníka a položila ju na dlaň. Tomáš sa zohol bližšie a zbadal, že na spodku je ešte drobný znak: tri malé bodky a pod nimi čiarka.

„To nie je len ozdoba,“ povedal.

Ela prikývla. „Je to systém. Niekto si sem zapisoval stopy.“

„Starí žiaci?“ spýtal sa Tomáš.

„Možno,“ odpovedala Ela. „Alebo niekto, kto chcel, aby sa odkazy našli len vtedy, keď ich niekto naozaj hľadá.“

Tomáš sa na chvíľu odmlčal. Potom sa usmial. „Tak ako my.“

Ela sa zasmiala potichu. „Presne tak.“

Chvíľu stáli pri okne a pozerali na predmet, ktorý sa v poslednom svetle dňa jemne ligotal. Už nepôsobil ako obyčajná drobnosť. Bol to kúsok niečoho väčšieho. Niečoho, čo bolo staré, ukryté a premyslené.

Karol si vzal metlu a odstúpil. „Ak budete pokračovať, nezabudnite na dve veci,“ povedal.

„Aké?“ spýtala sa Ela.

„Po prvé: vždy sa najprv porozprávajte spolu,“ povedal pokojne. „A po druhé: niekedy odpoveď prinesie až ďalší krok, nie ten prvý.“

Tomáš sa usmial. „To si zapamätáme.“

„To verím,“ odvetil Karol.

Ela zatvorila zápisník a opatrne doň uložila papierik s malou sovou. Potom si obaja s Tomášom vymenili krátky pohľad. Už nebol plný súťaženia, ale pokojného porozumenia. Obaja vedeli, že bez druhého by sa sem asi vôbec nedostali.

„Tak kam teraz?“ spýtal sa Tomáš.

Ela sa pozrela na svoj zápisník. „Najprv domov. A potom sa na to pozrieme znova. Spolu.“

Tomáš prikývol. „Spolu.“

Keď odchádzali od telocvične, skrinka číslo 17 zostala ticho stáť v rohu chodby. Bola stále stará, zaprášená a trochu záhadná, ale už nie prázdna. Teraz mali deti v rukách ďalšiu stopu.

A niekde hlboko v starej škole, medzi chodbami a zabudnutými miestami, sa tajomstvo klubu Sovy posunulo o malý krok bližšie k odhaleniu.

Secrets of the Old School, part 2: Locker Number 17

The Story Begins

After lessons, the old school was unusually quiet. Only from somewhere far away could they hear a soft tapping and the faint swish of a broom. Ella stood by the classroom window, holding her small notebook in her hand, and she was thinking about the old brass key.

"Do you think it really belongs somewhere?" she asked softly.

Thomas moved his grey backpack onto his other shoulder and nodded. "It must. Keys do not just disappear. Someone hid it on purpose."

Ella wrote two words in her notebook: gym and old lockers. Then she lifted her head. "Do you remember that there is an old part of the building near the gym? Only teachers and Caretaker Karl go there now."

Thomas thought for a moment. His brown eyes became bright. "Yes! There are those metal lockers there. Some are so old that the numbers are almost worn away."

Ella smiled. "Then let’s go and look. But quietly."

"Very quietly," Thomas agreed.

They both went out into the hallway. Old drawings hung on the walls. Late afternoon light shone on the windows, and the school felt peaceful, as if it was keeping its own secrets too. Ella walked first, but only by a small step. Thomas followed her and looked around from time to time to make sure nobody saw them.

Near the gym, the air was colder than in the classrooms. In the corner of the hallway stood a bench, and behind it there really was an old metal locker. It was dusty, a little scratched, and it looked like nobody had touched it for a long time. On the small door, there was a number that was almost impossible to see.

Ella bent her knees and leaned closer. "Look," she whispered. "Seventeen."

Thomas straightened up. "Locker number 17."

For a moment, they only looked at it. The number was so faded that if Ella had not noticed it, they might have missed it. The locker looked as if it had been standing there forever.

Thomas carefully looked down the hallway. "Nobody is watching."

Ella nodded and took the old brass key from her pocket. It had a soft shine and felt a little cold. She was going to hand it to Thomas, but he stopped her.

"You try it," he said. "You had the idea."

She looked at him in surprise. Then she smiled. "Okay."

First she tried to find the lock. The keyhole was hidden under a thin layer of dust. Ella gently wiped it with the sleeve of her yellow jacket. Then she put the key inside.

Nothing.

"Maybe it is too small," she whispered.

Thomas knelt beside her. "Wait, I’ll hold the door. Try turning it a little."

Ella took a deep breath and did exactly that. At first, the key did not move. Then they heard a soft click, almost too quiet to hear.

Both of them froze.

"Did you hear that?" Ella asked quickly.

Thomas smiled. "I did. It works!"

Still, the locker did not open at once. It was as if time had glued it shut. Thomas held it with both hands, and Ella gently pulled the handle. After a moment, the door slowly moved and opened with a small creak.

Inside there was nothing big. Only a small object wrapped in a piece of yellowed paper.

Ella did not even breathe. "So that is why it was locked for so long."

Thomas leaned closer. "Someone hid this very carefully."

Carefully, Ella took the little bundle out. The paper was thin and a little fragile to touch, but it held together. She opened it in her palm, and beneath it something tiny and metal flashed in the light.

When Things Start to Change

It was a small object in the shape of an owl.

Not a big ornament, but a small metal badge or charm. On the back, there was a sign Ella did not know. Thomas took it in his hand for only a moment and quickly turned it back.

"An owl," he said softly.

Ella nodded. "Like the symbol we have already seen."

At that moment, footsteps sounded in the hallway. Both children stiffened at once. Ella quickly hid the paper and the owl inside her notebook, and Thomas shut the locker halfway. But then only Caretaker Karl came around the corner with a broom in his hand. He had grey hair, a green work jacket, and a calm face, as always. His tired eyes stopped on them for a moment.

"Ah," he said quietly. "So you found it after all."

Ella and Thomas looked at each other.

"You knew it was here?" Thomas asked carefully.

Karl only smiled a little. "Knowing is a strong word. But I do know quite a lot about this part of the school. And about some lockers too."

Ella stepped a little closer. "This one was locked for a very long time. Why?"

Karl leaned on his broom and looked toward the gym, as if he was remembering something very old. "In the old school, people used to leave notes in places nobody noticed. Lockers, shelves, boxes. Someone liked order, but also secrets."

Thomas frowned. "So someone left it unused on purpose?"

"Maybe," Karl answered. "Or maybe nobody showed it to anyone for a long time."

Ella bit her lower lip. "And the owl?"

Karl smiled a little more, but he still did not say everything. "Owls can see better in the dark than other birds. Sometimes people need a sign like that too, so they know where to go next."

Thomas thought about it. "That means there is another clue here."

"You will find that out yourselves," Karl said and gave a small nod. "Just be careful. The old school likes silence. And not everything needs to be found at once."

Ella noticed that there was something carved on the back of the small owl. Not numbers, but a thin line, like a direction mark. She quickly wrote it down in her notebook. Thomas looked over her shoulder.

"It looks like an arrow," he said.

"Or a hallway," Ella added.

"Or a map," Thomas said.

For a short moment, they began to race each other with ideas again. Then they stopped. Ella looked at Thomas and smiled. "Let’s wait. We should look at it together."

Thomas nodded. "Yes. This time we won’t talk over each other."

Karl heard them and nodded with satisfaction. "That is a good start."

The children took the find a little farther to the window, where there was more light. Ella took the owl out of her notebook and placed it on her palm. Thomas bent closer and saw that on the bottom there was one more tiny sign: three small dots and a line under them.

"This is not just decoration," he said.

Ella nodded. "It is a system. Someone used this to keep track of clues."

"Old students?" Thomas asked.

"Maybe," Ella replied. "Or someone who wanted the notes to be found only by the person who was really looking."

Thomas was quiet for a moment. Then he smiled. "Like us."

Ella laughed softly. "Exactly."

For a while they stood by the window and looked at the object, which shone gently in the last light of the day. It no longer felt like an ordinary little thing. It was a piece of something bigger. Something old, hidden, and carefully planned.

An Important Moment

Karl took his broom and stepped back. "If you go on, remember two things," he said.

"What things?" Ella asked.

"First: always talk to each other first," he said calmly. "And second: sometimes the answer comes with the next step, not the first one."

Thomas smiled. "We will remember that."

"I believe you will," Karl said.

Ella closed her notebook and carefully placed the little owl paper inside it. Then she and Thomas exchanged a quick look. This time there was no competition, only calm understanding. Both of them knew that without the other, they probably would not have reached this place at all.

"So where now?" Thomas asked.

Ella looked at her notebook. "First home. And then we will look at it again. Together."

Thomas nodded. "Together."

As they walked away from the gym, locker number 17 stayed quietly in the corner of the hallway. It was still old, dusty, and a little mysterious, but it was no longer empty. Now the children had another clue in their hands.

And somewhere deep in the old school, between the hallways and the forgotten places, the secret of the Owl Club moved one small step closer to being found.
