„To nie je náhoda,“ povedal potichu. „Vedie to za budovu.“
Medzitým Ela prešla pár krokov popri kríkoch. Medzi nimi si všimla úzky priestor, ktorý by si inak možno ani nevšimla. Nebol to normálny chodník.
„Preto si to len pozrieme. Nič sa nesmie pokaziť.“
Spolu urobili prvé kroky do úzkeho priestoru.
Rám mal ošúchanú farbu a mreže boli tenké, ale pevné. Za sklom bolo vidno len kúsok tmavšieho priestoru.
Tomáš sa zastavil. „Toto tu určite niekto schoval schválne,“ povedal. „Z hlavného dvora by ho nik nevidel.“
Bolo tu niečo staré a tiché. Niečo, čo čakalo, kým ho niekto opäť nájde.
Práve vtedy sa za nimi ozvali kroky.
„Aha, tu ste.“
Deti sa otočili. Pri chodníku stál školník Karol v zelenej pracovnej bunde. Nevyzeral nahnevane ani vystrašene. Len pokojne, akoby presne vedel, kam ich zvedavosť dovedie.
„Nebojte sa,“ povedal s miernym úsmevom. „To miesto poznám.“
Ela si vydýchla. „Naozaj? Mysleli sme si, že sem nemáme chodiť.“
„Správne ste si mysleli,“ odvetil Karol. „Normálne sem žiaci nechodia. Ale ten chodník je starý. Kedysi býval súčasťou malej cesty pri starej časti školy. Časom ho zarastli kríky a skoro naň všetci zabudli.“
Ela otvorila zápisník a rýchlo si tú vetu poznačila.
„Sova,“ povedal pomaly.
Nebola to žiadna strašidelná partia.
Odkazy a kresby sovy
„A práve preto s tým netreba ponáhľať. Treba si to najprv premyslieť.“
Tomáš pritom stál vedľa nej a opakoval si v hlave, čo všetko už vedia: kľúč spod schodov, skrinka číslo 17, chodník za telocvičňou, mrežované okno a teraz tajomný odkaz.
Tomáš si prehodil batoh a pozrel smerom k budove školy. „A tá posledná stopa?“
No nikomu to neprekážalo.
Deti už vedeli, že nie každé tajomstvo treba otvoriť hneď. Niektoré si len pýtajú čas, pozornosť a rešpekt.
Tomáš kývol hlavou, akoby si v duchu zoradil všetky stopy do správneho radu. Potom sa obaja pozreli na školníka.
„Takže nabudúce zistíme, kam vedie posledná stopa?“ spýtala sa Ela.
„Áno,“ povedal Karol. „A spolu budeme pokračovať opatrne.“
Secrets of the Old School, part 11: The Secret Path Behind the Gym
The Clue by Locker 17
The afternoon in the old school was quiet. Warm air still lingered in the yard, and soft light fell through the gym windows. Ella stood by locker number 17 with her notebook in her hand, and Thomas leaned close to the wall, as if he wanted to hear even the softest whisper of the school.
"Look here," the girl whispered, pointing to a tiny sign she had marked before. It was a small arch with a dot, like a little stem. They had already seen it once before near the old brass key tag under the stairs. Now the same sign appeared again, this time on the wall behind the gym.
Thomas shifted his grey backpack onto his other shoulder and frowned. "This is no accident," he said quietly. "It leads behind the building."
Meanwhile, Ella walked a few steps along the bushes. Between them she noticed a narrow space that she might not have seen otherwise. It was not a normal path. It was more like a thin little way, hidden so well that someone may not have wanted anyone from the main yard to find it.
"People do not usually go behind the gym," Thomas reminded her carefully. His voice held curiosity, but also respect.
"I know," Ella nodded. "That is why we will only look. Nothing must go wrong."
The Narrow Path Behind the Gym
Together, they took their first steps into the narrow space. The grass rustled by their shoes, and old pebbles crackled under their feet. The air there was colder than in the yard, and between the gym wall and the thick bushes there was a smell of wet earth.
Then the path opened a little. The children walked slowly, side by side, and both tried to step as quietly as they could. Ella wrote down every small detail: the stones, the tall grass, the bent branch, and the small bump on the wall. Thomas watched the direction carefully, so they would know how to come back later.
Suddenly, a barred window of the old part of the school appeared in front of them. It was not big. The frame had worn paint, and the bars were thin but strong. Behind the glass, they could see only a small part of a darker room.
Thomas stopped. "Someone hid this here on purpose," he said. "From the main yard, no one would see it."
Ella folded her arms and nodded. She also felt that this place was not just an ordinary corner of the school. There was something old and quiet here. Something waiting for someone to find it again.
At that very moment, footsteps sounded behind them.
"Aha, here you are."
The children turned. Caretaker Karl stood by the path in his green work jacket. He did not look angry or afraid. He was only calm, as if he already knew where their curiosity would lead them.
Karl Explains the Old Place
"Do not worry," he said with a small smile. "I know this place."
Ella let out a breath. "Really? We thought we were not supposed to come here."
"You thought correctly," Karl answered. "Students do not usually come here. But this path is old. Long ago, it was part of a small way near the old part of the school. Over time, bushes grew over it, and almost everyone forgot it."
Thomas bent slightly and looked at the window. "What was this window for?"
The caretaker gazed into the distance for a moment, as if he were remembering long ago. "In old schools, there were sometimes hidden places where students left notes. Small papers, maps, messages about homework, or even secret greetings. That way, nobody could just find them."
Ella opened her notebook and quickly wrote that down. "So it was like a box?"
"Exactly," Karl nodded. "But not an ordinary one. It was a hiding place for children’s secrets."
The girl smiled. "So we did not find anything forbidden?"
"No," he said calmly. "Only old memories."
Those words made the children feel better. The tension they had carried from locker number 17 slowly melted away. Now it was clear that no danger was waiting for them, only a story that was opening little by little.
Karl led them closer to the bars. At the edge of the wall there was a small rubbed patch, as if many hands had touched the same place again and again. And right there, in the shadow of the bars, tiny pieces of paper could be seen. Not whole notes, only scraps that were almost falling apart.
Notes and Owl Drawings
"Look," Ella whispered.
Small drawings were also visible on the wall. One was clear: an owl with big eyes. Another was only a line and two dots, but it still reminded them of the same sign. Thomas knelt closer, but he did not touch the wall. He just looked and put the pieces together in his mind.
"An owl," he said slowly. "That is the sign we already saw on the key and in locker number 17."
Karl smiled gently. "Yes. It seems the owl belonged to a group of students who once called themselves the Owls. It was not a scary gang. More like friends. They helped each other with homework, drew maps, and left notes so they could share them only among themselves."
Ella moved her finger through the air above the drawing, but did not touch it. "So the secret club was not a ghost club or a treasure club?"
"No," Karl answered. "It was just an idea from children who wanted a little secret. And at the same time, they wanted to help each other."
Thomas stood up and looked at his friend. "That is actually nice. A big secret, but a good reason."
At the same time, Karl pointed to a narrow opening near the bars. "Something was hidden here for the longest time. But now it is almost covered in plaster."
The Unclear Message Behind the Bars
Ella bent closer. Then she noticed that from behind the bars, a tiny folded paper was sticking out. It was not within arm’s reach, but from one angle it could be seen. The girl moved one step left, then one step right. In the end, she breathed out softly.
"I can see it!" she said.
Thomas leaned in too. The paper had a small arrow, an owl, and part of a word on it. The rest was unclear, as if time had erased it. Still, they could feel that it pointed farther, deeper into the old part of the school.
"That is another clue," the boy whispered. "But we do not know the whole message."
Karl put his hands behind his back. "And because of that, we should not rush. You should not tear something out just because you are curious. First, you must think it through."
Ella nodded. Thomas liked riddles, so he began thinking at once. "If there is an arrow and an owl, it may lead to something important to the Owls. Maybe to another place where they left messages."
"Or to the beginning of their club," Ella added. "Maybe there we will find out how it all started."
The caretaker let them think for a while. Then he said calmly, "Exactly. And sometimes it is better to write down a clue than to try to open it right away. Old things deserve gentle care."
A Calm Return with a New Clue
The girl opened her notebook to a clean page and drew the arrow, the owl, and the shape of the word she could read. Thomas stood beside her and repeated in his mind everything they already knew: the key under the stairs, locker number 17, the path behind the gym, the barred window, and now the mysterious message.
Later, all three of them slowly walked back. The path behind the gym did not seem so strange anymore. When you know where it leads, even the shadow looks less scary. The grass rustled the same, and the pebbles still cracked under their feet, but the children now felt calmer than they had at the beginning.
"So this place is like an old story," Ella said when they stepped out of the narrow space. "At first it looks strange. Then you find out why it is there."
Karl smiled. "Exactly. And old stories are read slowly."
Thomas shifted his backpack and looked toward the school building. "And the last clue?"
"That will lead you farther," the caretaker answered. "Maybe even to how the Owls really began. But for that, we will have to go carefully and together."
Ella took a deep breath and felt that she was no longer afraid. She only felt curiosity now. It tickled in her stomach, but it did not hurt. "We will go," she said quietly. "But first I will write everything down properly."
The Last Clue
And so they returned to the yard. The gym stood behind them, quiet as always. Behind the bushes, the small beginning of the path was hidden, and behind the bars, the note still waited, unread in full. But nobody minded.
The children already knew that not every secret must be opened right away. Some secrets only ask for time, attention, and respect. And Karl was there to remind them of that.
Ella smiled into her notebook. Thomas nodded, as if he were arranging all the clues in the right order in his mind. Then both of them looked at the caretaker.
"So next time we will find out where the last clue leads?" Ella asked.
"Yes," Karl said. "And together we will continue carefully."
That was the end of the story for today. Not completely, but enough for the children to feel calm. The secret path behind the gym was no longer just a strange place. It was a piece of the school’s history, a memory of children who helped each other, and the first step toward another discovery about the Owls. And although the last clue was still waiting, Ella and Thomas already knew they would return ready.
