Ela si sadla na lavicu pri skrinkách a otvorila svoj zápisník presne na stránke, kde mala napísané posledné stopy zo skrinky číslo 17. Vedľa nej stál Tomáš a mračil sa tak sústredene, až si prstom pošúchal nos.

„Pozri,“ povedala dievčina potichu a prstom ukázala na starý nákres. „Tu bola tá skrinka, tu bol papierik a potom tá značka sovy. Myslela som si, že patrí len k tomu starému predmetu. Ale už si nemyslím, že je to také jednoduché.“

Tomáš sa naklonil bližšie. Na obrázku bola malá sova s rozprestretými krídlami. Chlapec si spomenul na znak, ktorý videli už v niekoľkých tajomných kútoch školy. Nepasoval do obyčajného zošita, ani do skrinky, ani do starej krabice. Skôr vyzeral ako znak, ktorý niekto používal veľmi dávno a veľmi opatrne.

„Všimla si si, že sa objavuje aj pri knižnici?“ spýtal sa.

Ela zdvihla hlavu. „Pri knižnici?“

„Áno. Včera som tam uvidel malú vyrezanú sovu na ráme dverí. Bolo to len na chvíľu, ale teraz mi to začína dávať zmysel.“

Dievča si rýchlo spravilo novú poznámku. Ceruzka jej šuchotala po papieri a medzi riadkami pribudlo niekoľko malých šípok. Potom si obaja pozreli na starú časť chodby, ktorá viedla smerom ku knižnici. Bola tichšia než zvyšok školy. Zároveň z nej bolo cítiť niečo zvláštne, akoby tam zostali schované staré príbehy.

„Možno ten znak nesúvisí len s jedným predmetom,“ zamrmlal Tomáš. „Možno vedie niekam ďalej.“

Karol a krabice v skladisku

Ela prikývla. V očiach sa jej rozžiarila zvedavosť. „Tak poďme zistiť kam.“

Lenže ešte skôr, než sa pohli, objavil sa školník Karol. Tlačil pred sebou vozík plný starých krabíc a na zelenom pracovnom kabáte mal zopár prachových škvŕn. Vyzeral pokojne, ako vždy, no jeho oči mali ten istý tichý výraz, ktorý deti už poznali. Vedel viac, než hovoril.

„Zase niečo skúmate?“ spýtal sa s miernym úsmevom.

„Len tak,“ odpovedala Ela, hoci jej zápisník hovoril pravý opak.

Karol sa zasmial. „Tak poďte radšej so mnou. V skladišti mám pár starých krabíc. Pomoc sa mi zíde.“

Tomáš si vymenil pohľad s Elou. Nepadlo ani jedno slovo navyše, ale obaja vedeli, že to je ich šanca. Ak Karol dovolí, aby mu pomohli, možno sa medzi vecami nájde ďalšia stopa.

Skladisko pri starej časti školy bolo malé, plné poličiek a drevených debien. Pri okne bolo položené slnko v mäkkých prúžkoch svetla. Krabice stáli v dvoch radoch a na niektorých boli napísané roky, ktoré už nikto z detí nepamätal.

„Tu sú veci zo starej knižnice, tu zo skladu učebníc a toto sú papiere, ktoré nikto nechce vyhodiť, ale ani nevie kam dať,“ povedal Karol a ukázal na tri hromady. „Pomôžte mi ich rozdeliť. A pozorne sa pozerajte. Nič neotvárajte bez rozmyslu.“

„Dobre,“ povedal Tomáš.

Ela už medzitým zdvihla jednu menšiu škatuľu. Bola ľahká, vnútri šuštali papieriky. Opatrne ju položila na stôl a začala triediť staré listy podľa farby a hrúbky, ako to robila, keď si doma ukladal svoje nákresy. Neskôr si všimla, že na spodku krabice je prilepený malý kúsok tvrdého papiera. Nevyzeral ako obyčajný odpad.

Malá mapka medzi papiermi

„Tomáš, pozri sa na toto,“ povedala.

Chlapec si k nej prisadol a opatrne odlepil papierik. Bol zložený na štvrtiny, úplne drobný, akoby ho niekto schoval naschvál. Keď ho rozložil, ukázala sa mapka. Nebola veľká, ale bola presná. Zobrazovala časť školy, chodby, schody a miesto pri knižnici. Po okrajoch boli malé značky. A medzi nimi znova tá sova.

„To je mapa!“ vykríkol potichu Tomáš.

Karol zdvihol obočie, ale neprekvapil sa. Len pomaly pristúpil bližšie. „Tak ste ju predsa našli.“

Ela držala mapku oboma rukami, akoby to bol krehký poklad. „Čo to znamená?“

„Niečo z histórie školy,“ povedal Karol. Jeho hlas bol pokojný, no znel vážne. „Bývalí žiaci si kedysi vytvorili malý Sovi klub. Bolo to miesto pre tých, čo radi pozorovali školu, zapisovali si zaujímavosti a potichu premýšľali. Sova bola ich znak.“

Tomáš si mapku prezeral zblízka. „A táto čiara vedie… nad knižnicu?“

Karol prikývol. „Áno. Lenže ešte predtým boli aj iné miesta. Klub nemal iba jednu skrýšu, ako si možno myslíte. Mal viac zastávok, viac stôp, viac tajomstiev.“

To už Elu úplne prebudilo. „Takže sa to celé týka celej školy?“

„Presne tak,“ odpovedal školník. Potom sa však na chvíľu odmlčal. „Ale všetko vám neprezradím naraz. Chcem, aby ste prišli na podstatu sami.“

Deti to rešpektovali. Karol bol síce záhadný, ale nikdy neklamal. A to bolo niekedy viac než dosť.

O chvíľu sa vydali podľa mapky smerom ku knižnici. Stará chodba bola úzka a dlhá. Na jednej strane boli vysoké okná, na druhej staré dvere, ktoré občas ticho zavŕzgali, aj keď sa ich nikto nedotkol. Zhora bolo počuť kroky, potom niekoho smiech, neskôr zasa šuchot zo schodiska. Škola bola plná bežných zvukov, no dnes ich bolo akosi priveľa.

Hluky v starej chodbe

Ela sa na chvíľu zastavila. „Sakra, to nás celé mýli.“

Tomáš vytiahol mapku a priložil ju ku stene. Na papieri boli malé značky a na omietke zas drobné ryhy, ktoré na prvý pohľad vyzerali ako náhodné škrabance. Keď ich však porovnal, uvidel, že sa zhodujú.

„Tadiaľ,“ povedal ticho.

Dievča si zapísalo krátku poznámku: stará chodba, značky sa zhodujú, neponáhľať sa. Potom sa zhlboka nadýchla. „Dobre. Ideme pomaly.“

Práve vtedy sa ozval hlasný buchot z dolného poschodia. Obaja sa strhli. Zo schodov sa niesli rýchle kroky a niekde veľmi blízko vŕzgali dvere. No nebolo to nič strašidelné. Len niekto niesol stoličky do triedy a ďalší žiak sa nahlas smial. Stará škola bola jednoducho plná života.

„To bol len hluk,“ zašepkal Tomáš, akoby si to potreboval potvrdiť aj sám.

„Vieme,“ odvetila Ela a úsmev jej trochu uvoľnil tvár.

Napokon dorazili na koniec chodby, kde bolo nad ich hlavami malé okienko a pod ním úzky priestor medzi stenou a policami knižnice. Karol ich dobehol o pár krokov neskôr. Ukázal nahor.

„Tam,“ povedal.

Deti zdvihli hlavy. V stene bolo naozaj nenápadné dvierka, malé a vysoké, skoro ako skrytý výklenok. Keby ich niekto nehľadal, vôbec by si ich nevšimol.

Ela si zakryla ústa dlaňou. „To je ono?“

„Áno,“ povedal Karol. „Kedysi tam bola malá miestnosť na schôdzky. Bývalý Sovi klub sa tam stretával. Po prestavbe budovy sa priestor prestal používať a skoro každý naň zabudol.“

Dvere nad knižnicou

Tomáš sa díval na dvierka s otvorenými očami. „Takže nad knižnicou naozaj je niečo ukryté.“

„Bolo ukryté,“ opravil ho školník jemne. „A stále to tam zostalo.“

Karol vytiahol z vrecka malý kľúč. Nebol lesklý, ale starostlivo opatrovaný. Chvíľu s ním pootočil v zámke a potom dvierka ticho povolili. Za nimi bol krátky schodík a malý priestor, do ktorého prenikalo len mäkké svetlo z chodby.

Vo vnútri bolo ticho. Nebolo to ticho prázdne a studené. Skôr také, ktoré si pamätá veľa príbehov.

Ela vstúpila ako prvá. Steny boli potiahnuté jemným prachom, no na jednom mieste ešte zostala stará nástenka. Na nej visel papier so znakom sovy. Vedľa stáli dve úzke lavice, akoby tu kedysi deti sedávali pri šepkajúcom rozhovore. Na malom stole ležali zošitky, do ktorých niekto písal veľmi úhľadným písmom. Tomáš jeden opatrne otvoril.

„Pozri!“ ukázal. „Sú tu poznámky o škole. O zvonoch, o knižnici, o dvore… dokonca aj o tom, kedy kvitnú kvety pri múre.“

Ela sa usmiala. „Takže oni si tu zapisovali všetko zaujímavé.“

„Presne,“ povedal Karol. „Boli zvedaví, ale aj trpezliví. Pozorovali a čakali. Vedeli, že nie všetko sa ukáže hneď.“

Dievča si sadlo na jednu lavicu a chvíľu len prechádzala prstom po okraji starého zošita. V hlave jej do seba zapadali kusy skladačky. Sova nebola len ozdoba. Nebol to ani náhodný znak. Bol to odkaz od detí, ktoré kedysi milovali školu natoľko, že si chceli uchovať jej tajomstvá.

Tichá miestnosť Sovieho klubu

Tomáš medzitým našiel na dne škatule ďalší papier. Bol menší než mapka a na okraji mal nakreslenú sovu, ale pri nej aj novú značku. Vyzerala ako malý dvor s dvoma stromami.

„Toto tu ešte nebolo,“ povedal.

Karol sa k nemu naklonil a pozrel sa na papier len na chvíľu. Potom spokojne prikývol. „Aha. Takže klub mal ešte jednu cestu.“

Ela sa postavila. „Kam vedie?“

Školník sa len usmial tým svojím tichým spôsobom. „Na to už musíte prísť sami.“

Keď vyšli z miestnosti, chodba pri knižnici sa im zrazu zdala svetlejšia. Nebolo to preto, že by sa niečo zázračne zmenilo. Skôr preto, že už vedeli viac. Tajomstvo bolo stále veľké, ale už nebolo ťažké. Bolo len ďalším dielikom v histórii školy.

Ela si pevne pritlačila zápisník k hrudi. „Dobre som si to zapisovala,“ povedala potichu, skôr sama pre seba.

Tomáš sa na ňu pozrel a usmial sa. „A ja som to dobre porovnával.“

„Spolu sme to zvládli,“ dodala.

Karol kráčal vedľa nich a keď prišli ku dverám starej časti školy, len na chvíľu zastal. „Nebolo treba utekať. Ani hádať naslepo. Stačilo pozorne sa pozerať.“

Deti prikývli. V tom mal pravdu.

Pri odchode si Ela všimla ešte niečo dôležité. Na okraji mapky, celkom pri kraji, bol drobný znak vedľa slova, ktoré sotva prečítala: starý školský dvor.

„Tomáš,“ zašepkala.

Chlapec vzal mapku do ruky. Chvíľu sa na ňu díval, potom sa mu oči zablysli. „To je nová stopa.“

Nová značka pri školskom dvore

„Áno,“ povedala Ela nadšene, ale už pokojnejšie než predtým. „A vieš čo? Tentoraz sa nikam neponáhľame.“

Karol ich počul, no nič nepovedal. Len im venoval krátke, spokojné prikývnutie. Akoby tým chcel povedať, že sú na dobrej ceste.

Vonku na chodbe znelo školské popoludnie úplne obyčajne. Niekto niesol zošity, niekto zabuchol dvere, z triedy sa ozval detský smiech. A predsa sa Ela s Tomášom cítili inak. Boli pokojnejší. Vedeli, že sa im podarilo odhaliť časť príbehu, ktorý bol v škole schovaný veľmi dlho.

A zároveň vedeli, že niekde pri starom školskom dvore na nich čaká ďalšia značka.

Secrets of the Old School, part 12: The Owl Above the Library

The Last Clue from Locker 17

Ella sat down on the bench by the lockers and opened her notebook right on the page with the last clues from locker number 17. Next to her stood Thomas. He frowned so hard in concentration that he rubbed his nose with one finger.

„Look,“ the girl said quietly, pointing to an old sketch. „This was the locker, this was the little note, and then there was the owl mark. I thought it belonged only to that old object. But now I do not think it is that simple.“

Thomas leaned closer. On the drawing was a small owl with wide-open wings. The boy remembered the sign they had already seen in several mysterious corners of the school. It did not fit an ordinary notebook, or a locker, or an old box. It looked more like a sign someone had used a very long time ago, and very carefully.

„Did you notice that it also appears near the library?“ he asked.

„Yes. Yesterday I saw a small carved owl on the door frame there. It was only for a moment, but now it is starting to make sense.“

The girl quickly made a new note. Her pencil whispered over the paper, and a few small arrows appeared between the lines. Then both of them looked toward the old part of the corridor that led to the library. It was quieter than the rest of the school. At the same time, it had a strange feeling, as if old stories were hiding there.

Karl and the Boxes in the Storage Room

„Maybe the sign is not only about one object,“ Thomas muttered. „Maybe it leads somewhere else.“

Ella nodded. Curiosity lit up in her eyes. „Then let us find out where.“

But just before they could move, Caretaker Karl appeared. He pushed a cart full of old boxes, and there were a few dusty spots on his green work jacket. He looked calm, as always, but his eyes had that same quiet expression the children already knew. He knew more than he said.

„Are you investigating something again?“ he asked with a small smile.

„Just looking around,“ Ella answered, even though her notebook said something else.

Karl laughed softly. „Then come with me instead. I have a few old boxes in the storage room. I could use some help.“

Thomas exchanged a look with Ella. Not one extra word was said, but both of them knew this was their chance. If Karl let them help him, maybe another clue would be found among the things.

The storage room near the old part of the school was small and full of shelves and wooden crates. By the window, soft stripes of sunlight lay on the floor. The boxes stood in two rows, and on some of them were years that no child could remember.

„These are things from the old library, these are from the textbook storage, and these are papers nobody wants to throw away, but nobody knows where to put,“ Karl said, pointing to the three piles. „Help me sort them. And look carefully. Do not open anything without thinking.“

The Little Map Hidden in the Papers

„Okay,“ said Thomas.

Meanwhile, Ella had already picked up a smaller box. It was light, and little papers rustled inside. She carefully put it on the table and began sorting the old sheets by color and thickness, just as she did when she arranged her drawings at home. Later, she noticed that a small piece of stiff paper was stuck to the bottom of the box. It did not look like ordinary trash.

„Thomas, look at this,“ she said.

The boy sat down beside her and carefully peeled the paper away. It had been folded into four parts, very tiny, as if someone had hidden it on purpose. When he opened it, a map appeared. It was not large, but it was exact. It showed part of the school, the corridor, the stairs, and the place near the library. There were small marks around the edges. And among them was the owl again.

„It is a map!“ Thomas whispered excitedly.

Karl raised his eyebrows, but he did not look surprised. He only came closer slowly. „So you found it after all.“

Ella held the map with both hands, as if it were a fragile treasure. „What does it mean?“

„Something from the history of the school,“ Karl said. His voice was calm, but serious. „Long ago, former pupils made a small Owl Club. It was a place for those who liked to watch the school, write down interesting things, and think quietly. The owl was their sign.“

Noises in the Old Corridor

Thomas studied the map closely. „And this line leads… above the library?“

Karl nodded. „Yes. But before that, there were other places too. The club did not have only one hiding place, as you may think. It had more stops, more clues, more secrets.“

Now Ella was completely awake with excitement. „So this is all connected to the whole school?“

„Exactly,“ the caretaker answered. Then he paused for a moment. „But I will not tell you everything at once. I want you to discover the main point yourselves.“

The children respected that. Karl was mysterious, but he never lied. And sometimes that was more than enough.

After a while, they followed the map toward the library. The old corridor was narrow and long. On one side were high windows, and on the other were old doors that sometimes creaked softly even when nobody touched them. From upstairs came footsteps, then someone laughing, and later the rustle of the staircase. The school was full of everyday sounds, but today there seemed to be too many of them.

Ella stopped for a moment. „Gosh, this is confusing us completely.“

Thomas took out the map and held it against the wall. On the paper were small marks, and on the plaster there were tiny scratches that first looked like random marks. But when he compared them, he saw that they matched.

The Door Above the Library

„This way,“ he said quietly.

The girl wrote a short note: old corridor, marks match, do not hurry. Then she took a deep breath. „All right. Let us go slowly.“

Suddenly, a loud bang came from the lower floor. Both of them jumped. Fast steps rushed up the stairs, and somewhere very close a door creaked. But it was nothing scary. Just someone carrying chairs into a classroom and another pupil laughing loudly. The old school was simply full of life.

„That was only noise,“ Thomas whispered, as if he needed to say it to himself too.

„We know,“ Ella answered, and her smile relaxed her face a little.

At last they reached the end of the corridor, where there was a small window above their heads and below it a narrow space between the wall and the library shelves. Karl caught up a few steps later. He pointed upward.

„There,“ he said.

The children looked up. There really was a small hidden door in the wall, tiny and high, almost like a secret alcove. If someone had not been looking for it, they would never have noticed it.

Ella covered her mouth with her hand. „Is that it?“

„Yes,“ Karl said. „A long time ago, there was a small meeting room there. The old Owl Club used to meet in it. After the building was rebuilt, the space was no longer used, and almost everyone forgot about it.“

The Quiet Room of the Owl Club

Thomas stared at the door with wide eyes. „So there really is something hidden above the library.“

„It was hidden,“ the caretaker corrected gently. „And it is still there.“

Karl took a small key from his pocket. It was not shiny, but it had been carefully kept. He turned it in the lock for a moment, and then the little door opened quietly. Behind it was a short stairway and a small space where only soft light from the corridor came in.

Inside, it was silent. Not empty and cold silent. More like the kind of silence that remembers many stories.

Ella stepped in first. The walls were covered with a thin layer of dust, but in one place there was still an old notice board. On it hung a paper with the owl sign. Beside it stood two narrow benches, as if children had once sat here for quiet talks. On a small table were notebooks that someone had written in with very neat handwriting. Thomas carefully opened one.

„Look!“ he said, pointing. „There are notes about the school. About the bells, the library, the yard… even about when the flowers bloom by the wall.“

Ella smiled. „So they wrote down everything interesting here.“

„Exactly,“ said Karl. „They were curious, but patient too. They watched and waited. They knew not everything shows itself at once.“

The New Mark by the School Yard

The girl sat down on one bench and for a moment only ran her finger over the edge of an old notebook. In her head, the puzzle pieces were coming together. The owl was not just a decoration. It was not a random sign either. It was a message from children who had once loved the school so much that they wanted to keep its secrets.

Meanwhile, Thomas found another paper at the bottom of the box. It was smaller than the map, and on the edge there was an owl drawing, but beside it was a new mark too. It looked like a small yard with two trees.

„This was not here before,“ he said.

Karl leaned over and looked at the paper only for a moment. Then he nodded with satisfaction. „I see. So the club had another path.“

Ella stood up. „Where does it lead?“

The caretaker only smiled in that quiet way of his. „You will have to find that out yourselves.“

When they came out of the room, the corridor near the library suddenly seemed brighter. It was not because anything had changed by magic. It was because they knew more now. The secret was still big, but it was no longer heavy. It was only another piece in the history of the school.

Ella pressed her notebook tightly to her chest. „I wrote it down well,“ she said softly, mostly to herself.

The Last Clue

Thomas looked at her and smiled. „And I compared it well.“

„Together, we did it,“ she added.

Karl walked beside them, and when they reached the door of the old part of the school, he stopped for a moment. „There was no need to run. And no need to guess blindly. It was enough to look carefully.“

The children nodded. He was right.

As they left, Ella noticed one more important thing. On the edge of the map, right at the side, there was a tiny sign next to words she could hardly read: old schoolyard.

„Thomas,“ she whispered.

The boy took the map in his hand. He looked at it for a moment, and then his eyes lit up. „That is a new clue.“

„Yes,“ Ella said excitedly, but calmer than before. „And you know what? This time we will not hurry.“

Karl heard them, but he said nothing. He only gave them a short, pleased nod, as if to say they were on the right path.

Out in the corridor, the school afternoon sounded completely ordinary. Someone was carrying notebooks, someone slammed a door, and a child laughed from a classroom. Still, Ella and Thomas felt different. They were calmer. They knew they had uncovered part of a story that had been hidden in the school for a very long time.
