Potom palec hore. O chvíľu Kaja napísala: „A kto ide s kým?

Kaja zasa napísala: „Ja idem s hranolkami.

Bolo to obyčajné. A práve preto ho to trochu mýlilo.

Napokon napísal: „Ahoj. Ideš v piatok na talenty? Ak chceš, mohli by sme ísť spolu.

Ráno prišiel do školy skôr než zvyčajne. Na chodbe bolo cítiť mokré bundy a sladký čaj z automatu.

„Ahoj,“ povedal.

„Ahoj,“ odvetila Nela. „Napísala som ti.“

„Videl som.“

To bola hlúpa odpoveď. Samozrejme, že videl. Jej správa mu svietila na displeji skoro do polnoci.

„Takže…“ začal a opravil si popruh na batohu. „Myslel som to normálne.

„A čo znamená normálne?“

Pozval ma, lebo nechce ísť práve so mnou len tak.

To vedela.

To sa ľahko povie, pomyslela si Nela. Nahlas však povedala iba: „Ja z toho nerobím maturitu.“

Práve vtedy zavibroval mobil, ktorý mala položený v lavici pod zošitom. V triednom chate pribudla nová správa.

Kaja, sediaca rovno pred ňou, si ju prečítala tiež.

„No nie,“ vydýchla.

Správu poslal Patrik: „Tak kto už má dvojicu na piatok? Nech viem, komu nemám kaziť romantickú atmosféru pri automate.“

Pod tým sa rýchlo objavili reakcie. Smiech. Oči. Srdce.

Nakoniec mobil zamkla a položila ho displejom dolu.

Nela si pomaly ukladala veci do tašky.

„Ahoj,“ povedala Nela.

„Ahoj.“ Pozrel sa smerom ku schodom, kde sa ozývali kroky. Potom späť na ňu. „Môžem sa ťa niečo spýtať? Tentoraz bez divného formulára?“

Dôležitý okamih

Nela sa neubránila krátkemu smiechu. „Skús.“

„Chceš ísť so mnou v piatok na tie talenty?“

Povedal to jednoducho.

Nevyzeral urazene.

„Automat by ma asi odmietol.

To znelo hrozne.“

Nebola to veľká veta. Práve preto v nej nebolo nič, pred čím by sa musela schovať.

Nela pomaly prikývla. „Dobre.

Nabudúce: Škola vyhlási deň bez mobilov a trieda zistí, aké hlasné vie byť offline ticho

Between Us, part 8: The First Invitation

The Story Begins

On Monday evening, a new message appeared in the class chat for 8.B from Zuzka, who was in charge of the posters.

“Reminder: on Friday there is the school talent night. If you are helping at the stands, come at four. If you only want to watch, you can come at six as usual.”

Under the message, one heart appeared first. Then a thumbs-up. After a while, Kaja wrote: “And who is going with whom? That is clearly the most important planning question.”

Three laughing emojis followed, then one answer from someone else in the class, and after that a short silence. It did not last even a minute, but Filip stared at it as if it had real weight.

He was sitting on his bed in a sports jacket he had not yet taken off after training. A school bag lay beside him, with a physics notebook sticking out. He held his phone so close to his face that the screen light shone into his eyes.

Kaja wrote again: “I’m going with fries. The most stable relationship in my life.”

The chat started moving again. Someone sent a gif of a dancing potato. Adam reacted only with a thumbs-up, which with him could mean anything from a big agreement to the fact that he did not feel like typing anymore.

Filip opened a private chat with Nela.

He typed: “Are you going to the talent night on Friday?”

He read the sentence for a moment. Then he deleted it.

“Do you want to go to the school evening on Friday?”

He deleted that too. Suddenly it sounded as if he were offering her a ticket to something serious. But it was only a school event in the gym, where a ninth-grade band would play, cake would be sold at the snack stand, and teachers would stand by the doors so nobody could leave without a jacket.

And yet Nela had to be there.

With her, Filip never felt like talking too loudly. He did not have to make a joke just to keep everything around him moving. It was enough that she sat next to him during group work, or that she handed him a forgotten pen after class. It was ordinary. And because of that, it confused him a little.

In the end, he wrote: “Hi. Are you going to the talent night on Friday? If you want, we could go together. I mean, arrive together. If you are not going with someone already.”

His finger stayed over the send arrow.

Then another message appeared in the class chat.

“Filip, you will definitely be by the entrance signing autographs,” someone wrote.

The boy almost smiled, but he did not laugh. Instead, he sent his message to Nela. He put the phone face down on the bed, as if that could stop everything that might happen after sending it.

The next morning he arrived at school earlier than usual. The hallway smelled like wet jackets and sweet tea from the vending machine. A few students were gathered outside the classroom, comparing whose shoes were wetter.

Nela was standing by her locker with an open notebook in her hands. Her long brown hair was over one shoulder, and there was a small damp spot from the rain on the sleeve of her hoodie. When she noticed him, she gave a little smile for a moment.

At that second, Filip understood that the night before he had not been staring at his phone because he was waiting for an answer. He had been waiting for this morning.

When Things Start to Change

“Hi,” he said.

“Hi,” Nela answered. “I wrote to you.”

“I saw.”

It was a stupid answer. Of course he had seen it. Her message had been glowing on his screen almost until midnight.

“So…” he began and adjusted the strap of his backpack. “I meant it normally. That we could just go there together. If you want.”

Nela looked at the open notebook, even though she clearly was not looking for anything in it. “And what does normally mean?”

Filip took a breath, but just then Kaja walked past with Adam. Kaja looked at them, then at the phone in Filip’s hand, and her eyebrows lifted in exactly the way that showed she had noticed something.

“Good morning, secret people,” she called. “Nela, we have math. If we survive that today, the talent night will be easy.”

Adam only gave a quick smile and kept going. Kaja was already at the door when she looked back once more.

Nela pulled her notebook to her chest. “I’ll write to you later, okay?”

“Sure,” Filip said too quickly. “No problem at all.”

After she went into the classroom, he stayed by the locker for a moment on his own. He acted like he was looking for something in his jacket pocket, although he knew very well that there were only gum and keys in it.

In the first lesson, Nela opened the notebook covered with stickers. Among them were a small blue moon, a dog with glasses, and the word CALM, with the second A already starting to peel off.

The teacher was explaining something about sentence parts. Nela wrote notes, but on the edge of the page, instead of examples, two short sentences appeared.

He invited me because he does not want to go alone.

He invited me because he does not want to go with me in a way.

She stared at them so long that the letters began to blur together. Then she added a question mark after both possibilities.

It was not unpleasant that he had asked her. She knew that much. What felt strange was that when she imagined Friday, sometimes she wanted to smile and sometimes she wanted to disappear behind someone’s back. What if Filip meant something else? What if she meant something else? And what if the whole class watched them, even if nobody said it out loud?

During the break, Kaja sat down next to her desk without asking.

“Well?” she asked quietly.

Nela closed her notebook. “Well what?”

“Please. Filip looked in the hallway like someone had told him the test would be oral.”

“He just asked me something.”

“Aha.” Kaja reached for Nela’s pen. “And did that thing he asked about happen to have a time slot on Friday at six?”

Nela took the pen back. “Kaja.”

“Okay, okay. I’m not saying anything.” Her friend grinned, but this time not in a mean way. “Only… if you want to go, then go. And if you don’t want to, then don’t. You do not have to turn it into your final exam.”

That was easy to say, Nela thought. But out loud she only said, “I’m not turning it into my final exam.”

Just then, the phone she had left in her desk under the notebook buzzed. A new message had appeared in the class chat.

Kaja, who was sitting right in front of her, read it too.

“Oh no,” she breathed.

Patrik had sent the message: “So who already has a partner for Friday? I just want to know who I should not ruin the romantic mood for near the vending machine.”

An Important Moment

Below that, reactions appeared fast. Laughing. Eyes. A heart. Someone wrote: “Some people are strangely quiet today.”

A few desks away, Filip’s phone buzzed too. The boy looked at the screen, and his smile, which he had just given Adam, froze a little.

Kaja muttered softly, “Patrik is really talented. At talent night he could perform in the category of useless comments.”

Nela said nothing. Suddenly it felt as if her answer to Filip was not just an answer anymore. It felt like other people would see it too, even those who had nothing to do with it.

After a while, she wrote in the private chat: “Sorry I didn’t answer properly this morning.”

The three dots appeared almost at once.

“It’s okay,” came the reply. “I didn’t ask properly either.”

Nela stared at it. She wanted to write that it was not his fault. Then she wanted to write that maybe she did not even know what she wanted. In the end, she locked her phone and put it face down.

Silence in the chat was sometimes worse than many messages. This time, though, it was silent inside her too.

After the last lesson, the class spilled out into the hallway. Someone hurried to catch the bus, someone else was looking for a forgotten hoodie, and Kaja by the door was loudly trying to convince Adam that helping at the cake stall counted as a noble deed.

Nela packed her things slowly into her bag. She waited until the class had emptied a little, but at the same time she did not know what she was waiting for.

When she went outside, Filip was standing by the window at the end of the hallway. Outside the glass was a gray afternoon, and the wet asphalt in front of the school reflected the lights of cars. The boy leaned against the sill and looked as if he were there by chance. But his bag was still on his shoulder, and he had not left yet.

“Hi,” Nela said.

“Hi.” He glanced toward the stairs, where footsteps were sounding, and then back at her. “Can I ask you something? This time without the weird wording?”

Nela could not help a short laugh. “Try.”

“Do you want to go with me to the talent night on Friday?”

He said it simply. No extra words, no pretending it was completely random. Because of that, her answer did not come right away.

“I…” she began and looked toward the end of the hallway. “I don’t know if I can answer that this fast.”

Filip nodded. He did not look offended. More tired, maybe, but calmer than in the morning.

“That’s okay,” he said. “I just didn’t want it to look like I wrote it as a joke. Or like I’m asking because someone in the chat will have comments.”

“Those comments would happen even if you invited the vending machine,” Nela said.

This time he laughed for real. “The vending machine would probably reject me. I don’t have coins.”

For a moment, a nicer silence settled in the hallway. Not empty. The kind where nobody has to save anything quickly.

“It’s not that I’m confused because you asked me,” Nela said quietly. “It’s more… I don’t know what I think about it myself. Not about you. I mean, also about you, but not in a bad way. That sounded terrible.”

“No, it didn’t.” Filip shifted his bag higher on his shoulder. “I think I understand. A little.”

“And what do you think?” she asked before she could stop herself.

What Comes Next

He looked out the window for a moment. “That with you, I don’t have to make everything a joke. And that I wanted to ask you. That’s probably all.”

It was not a big sentence. That was exactly why there was nothing in it she needed to hide from.

Nela slowly nodded. “Okay. Can I write to you tonight?”

“You can.” He smiled. “And you can also write tomorrow. The invitation has a pretty long shelf life.”

“That’s practical.”

“I’m a very practical person,” he said, and finally that familiar light humor returned to his voice.

They went down the stairs together, but at the entrance they split up, each going in a different direction. They did not walk side by side to the bus stop. They did not hold hands. They only looked back once more at the gate, as if they wanted to make sure the conversation had really happened.

That evening, Nela sat at the table in her room. Her phone lay beside the lamp and did not show any new messages yet. In the class chat, people were arguing about whether pizza would be sold at the talent night. Patrik sent another joke, this time about a romantic mood near the school radiators. Nobody really answered him anymore.

Nela opened her notebook to a clean page. She circled her pen over the paper for a long time. Then she wrote Filip a short message.

“Okay. I’ll go with you. But if the music is bad, we can pretend we’re there for the pizza.”

The reply came after a while.

“Deal. And if there is no pizza, we’ll say we’re there for culture.”

She smiled, put the phone aside, and wrote one more sentence in her notebook.

“Yes and no can both be hard when you are still finding out what you really want.”

To be continued…
