A náš kvet len pozorujte.

Stál presne medzi krabičkou s pastelmi a malým glóbusom. Keď niekto nechal na okne papierik alebo omrvinku, pani učiteľka často povedala: „Pozrite, strážca poriadku by bol smutný.“ A trieda to upratala.

Keď učiteľka odišla, Adam sa naklonil ku kamarátom.

„Operácia Zelený list sa začína!“ šepol. „Pomôžeme mu potajomky. Rýchlo, ticho a úplne nenápadne.“

Miško si všimol krhlu a zašepkal dievčaťu vedľa seba: „Prečo Adam odpočúva zalievadlo?“

„Možno zachytáva tajný signál,“ zašepkala ona späť.

Adam zbadal ich zvedavé pohľady. Namiesto toho, aby krhlu jednoducho položil, schoval ju za chrbát. Tým to vyzeralo ešte podozrivejšie.

„A v skle vidím seba.

„Aby neutiekol.“

„Krhla nemá nohy,“ povedala Ela.

„To zatiaľ neznamená, že nemôže zmiznúť.“

Kým sa Adam znovu obrátil ku kvetu, Samo mu krhlu opatrne vzal. Prešiel popri laviciach, otvoril skrinku s výtvarnými potrebami a položil ju za veľkú škatuľu s farebnými papiermi. Vedľa nej ležali štetce, plastelína a zopár zaschnutých temperových téglikov.

Keď sa veci začnú meniť

Samo skrinku zatvoril tak ticho, až to skoro nebolo počuť.

Adam spokojne prikývol. „Dobrý ťah. Tajné vybavenie na tajnom mieste.“

Ela sa naňho pozrela. „Ty vieš, kde je?“

„Samozrejme. Teda…

Dvierka zaklapli.

„Vážení spolužiaci, ide o veľmi dôležitú a úplne… ehm… neobyčajne obyčajnú vec.“

„To nevysvetľuje nič,“ povedala Ela.

„Práve to je na tom tajné.“

„A čo ak má krhla vlastný plán?“ spýtal sa Samo.

V triede nastalo ticho.

„My sme ho nechceli pokaziť,“ povedal. „Len zachrániť.“

Pani učiteľka k nim pristúpila. „Koho?“

„Strážcu poriadku,“ odpovedali Adam a Ela naraz.

Keď skončili, nakukla do skrinky. Za škatuľou s farebnými papiermi našla zelenú krhlu.

„Tu je,“ povedal Samo spokojne. „Presne tam, kam som ju dal.“

„To je veľká výhoda doslovného poriadku,“ uznala pani učiteľka.

Ela si prezrela kvet. „Zemina je suchá. Potrebuje trochu vody a zostať pri okne. Nič viac.“

Adam chytil krhlu, ale tentoraz sa zastavil. „Mám nalievať?“

Pani učiteľka sa usmiala. „Pomaly.“

To by bolo až príliš kúzelné.

Adam písal a Ela mu diktovala, aby nepreskočil žiadne slovo.

Do zošita pribudla veta: „Tajné akcie v triede bývajú tajné len dovtedy, kým ich niekto nezačne zachraňovať.“

The Big Mistake Club, part 4: Secret Mission: Class Plant

The Story Begins

The morning sun drew yellow squares on the windowsill. Next to the window stood the class plant in a clay pot. Usually, its leaves stood up like little green flags. Today, though, they hung down.

Adam leaned over it so close that his nose almost touched the soil.

“We have a problem,” he whispered seriously.

Ela pushed her round purple glasses up her nose. “We have a plant that looks tired. That is not yet an international problem.”

Samo studied the plant for a long time. “Is it standing or sitting?”

“Standing,” said Ela.

“Then why does it look like it wants to sleep?”

Just then, Mrs Benková shut her notebook on the desk. She wore a dark green sweater and a calm smile.

“Children, I need to go to the deputy head for a moment,” she said. “Please keep reading quietly. And just watch our plant. Leave it nicely in its place by the window.”

Adam looked at Ela and Samo. All three of them knew this was no ordinary flower. The teacher called it the guardian of order on the windowsill. It stood exactly between the box of crayons and the little globe. When someone left a scrap of paper or a crumb on the window, she often said, “Look, the guardian of order would be sad.” Then the class cleaned up.

When the teacher left, Adam leaned toward his friends.

“Operation Green Leaf begins!” he whispered. “We’ll help it in secret. Fast, quiet, and completely unnoticed.”

Ela glanced at the clock. “We have maybe five minutes. Enough for water. Not for an operation.”

“An operation can be short too,” Adam argued.

Samo raised one finger. “And if it is so secret that even we do not know about it, how will we know when it is over?”

That was a good question. But Adam had already pulled a small green watering can out from under the table.

He held it with both hands and looked as if he had found a machine from a space ship.

“This,” he whispered, “is a secret rescue device.”

“That is a watering can,” said Ela.

“A secret watering can.”

“It is still a watering can.”

Samo bent closer. “Does it have a grow button?”

Adam turned the watering can, looked under it, and then put its long spout to his ear. The water inside splashed softly.

“Do you hear anything?” Ela asked.

“It sounds very important,” said Adam.

A few classmates looked up from their reading. Miško noticed the watering can and whispered to the girl next to him, “Why is Adam listening to the watering tool?”

“Maybe he is catching a secret signal,” she whispered back.

Adam saw their curious looks. Instead of just putting the can down, he hid it behind his back. That made it look even more suspicious.

Ela sighed quietly. “The unnoticed part has just gone out the window.”

“Then we have to find it,” said Samo, and at once he turned to the window.

“Not that unnoticed thing,” Ela stopped him. Then she looked at the plant. “First, let’s find out what is wrong. Maybe it needs water. Maybe it is too hot. And maybe it only looks sad because the leaves are heavy.”

Adam’s eyes lit up. “A watching mission!”

Before Ela could explain that she meant simply looking, all three lined up by the window. Adam stared outside with narrowed eyes. Ela examined the soil in the pot. Samo bent over it so carefully, as if he were reading tiny letters on a leaf.

“I see dry soil,” he announced.

When Things Start to Change

“That’s useful,” Ela said.

“I see a drop on the windowsill.”

“Also useful.”

“And in the glass I see myself. I look like I’m hunting a dragon.”

Adam nodded. “That is exactly how a proper searcher looks.”

Behind them, the whispering began to spread faster than a paper airplane. Someone thought they were looking for a fingerprint. Someone else said a secret package had landed in the schoolyard. Kristínka even suggested, very quietly, that something might be missing.

“Only something that was here can go missing,” said Samo.

Ela turned around. “That is surprisingly exact.”

Then a bang sounded at the door. Someone in the hall had dropped a box of books. Samo jumped and looked at the watering can in Adam’s hands.

“The object must be secured,” he declared. “So it cannot run away.”

“A watering can has no legs,” said Ela.

“That does not mean it cannot disappear.”

Before Adam could turn back to the plant, Samo carefully took the can from him. He walked past the desks, opened the cupboard with art supplies, and placed it behind a large box of coloured paper. Next to it lay brushes, modelling clay, and a few dry paint pots.

Samo closed the cupboard so softly that it was almost silent.

Adam nodded with satisfaction. “Good move. Secret equipment in a secret place.”

Ela looked at him. “Do you know where it is?”

“Of course. I mean… Samo knows.”

Meanwhile, the boy had gone back to the window and was staring again at the dry soil. A moment later Adam held out his hand.

“Secret device, please.”

Samo frowned. “Which one?”

“The watering can.”

“It is secured.”

“Where?”

Samo opened his mouth, but at that exact moment two children by the cupboard began pushing each other so they could look inside better. The doors slammed shut. Someone shouted, “Did you find treasure?”

“Maybe a spell!” Kristínka joined in.

Adam went a little pale. That was enough for Ela to know he also no longer fully understood what was happening.

“Do you remember when the brushes got mixed up with the glue and half the class painted shiny clouds?” she said quietly. “That also started with the words: Leave it to me.”

“Those clouds were beautiful,” Adam defended himself.

“One of them stuck to the desk.”

By now the whole class was watching the cupboard. The ordinary watering can had become the most secret thing in the school. Miško asked if it was a detective game. Kristínka wanted to know whether there was a map hidden under the drawings. Even the children who had been reading a moment ago were standing by the desks with tense faces.

Adam took a breath. “Dear classmates, this is a very important and completely… um… unusually ordinary thing.”

“That explains nothing,” said Ela.

“That is what makes it secret.”

“What if the watering can has its own plan?” Samo asked.

The classroom went quiet. Then the door opened.

Mrs Benková came back earlier than they expected. One look showed her the open cupboard, the crowd of children, Adam with his hands in the air, Ela with a hand on her forehead, and Samo studying the handle as if it ought to answer him.

“It seems,” she said calmly, “that my three minutes were very busy.”

No one laughed. Adam looked down. Ela glanced at the wilting plant. Samo raised his hand.

“We did not want to break it,” he said. “Only save it.”

The teacher came closer. “Save whom?”

“The guardian of order,” Adam and Ela said at the same time.

Then the truth came out faster than Adam’s first plan. They told her about the dry leaves, the secret mission, the device, the watching by the window, and the watering can that had been secured so well that nobody could find it.

An Important Moment

The teacher listened without a single frown. When they finished, she looked into the cupboard. Behind the box of coloured paper she found the green watering can.

“Here it is,” said Samo happily. “Exactly where I put it.”

“That is the great advantage of literal order,” Mrs Benková said.

Ela studied the plant. “The soil is dry. It needs a little water and to stay by the window. Nothing more.”

Adam picked up the watering can, but this time he stopped. “May I pour?”

The teacher smiled. “Slowly.”

So he watered the plant slowly. Samo watched to make sure the water did not spill onto the windowsill. Ela held the leaves so the can would not catch on their thin stems. The other children slowly returned to their seats, although they were still looking curiously.

Of course, the plant did not straighten up right away. That would have been too magical. But after a while, one leaf stopped hanging so low. It looked just a little braver.

“See?” said Mrs Benková. “Sometimes help is completely ordinary. And that does not make it less important.”

Later, when the class had calmed down, Adam, Ela, and Samo took out their club notebook. On the last page they already had a few short notes about ideas that had not worked as planned. Adam read one and smiled.

“Next time I will slow down first,” he said. “At least until I am holding something that sounds important.”

“A watering can does not sound important,” Ela reminded him.

“When you hold it to your ear, it does a little.”

Samo thought for a moment. “Can I have a mission next time called Report on what is really in plain sight?”

“That would be a useful mission,” said Ela.

Mrs Benková handed them a pencil. “Write down today’s rule. I think you earned it.”

Adam wrote, and Ela dictated so he would not skip a single word. Samo checked whether every letter could really be seen.

In the notebook, a new sentence appeared: “Secret actions in the classroom stay secret only until someone starts rescuing them.”

All three looked at it. Then they laughed as quietly as they could. By the window, the class plant stood in its place, and its leaves, in the sunlight, looked as if they had no plans to run away at all.
