The Forest of Little Lights, Part 1: The Lantern in the Moss

When Lily finds a dark little lantern in the moss, she and Glimmer discover that gentle care can wake even the quietest light.

The Forest of Little Lights, Part 1: The Lantern in the Moss

The Story Begins

At the edge of the enchanted forest, the morning was quiet and soft as moss. Lily sat on the path among pinecones and little leaves. She wore a soft green rain jacket, tiny yellow boots, and a leaf-shaped bag at her side. With a gentle smile, she arranged small stones into a circle and talked quietly to herself, as if she did not want to disturb the forest.

“This will be a little bridge for a beetle,” Lily whispered, tilting her head.

Then she noticed something strange in the soft moss beside the path. Between the green cushions lay something small and dark. At first, Lily only looked. Then she bent closer.

“Oh,” she said quietly. “Is that a little lantern?”

It really was a tiny lantern, but it did not shine. It did not seem sad. It only looked as though it were sleeping. Lily knelt beside it and carefully lifted it into her hands. It was light and smooth, with a tiny handle on top.

“Don’t worry,” she whispered. “I’ll have a look at you.”

The lantern was completely dark.

“But it isn’t broken,” Lily said after a while, as if she wanted to make sure for herself. “It’s just quiet.”

Suddenly, a tiny round face peeked out of a little opening in the lantern. It belonged to a small glowing creature with a golden light on its body, a leaf hat, and tiny transparent wings. He had big, kind eyes.

“Hello,” he said. “I’m Glimmer.”

Lily was a little frightened, only a little, but she smiled straight away. There was nothing scary about him. Glimmer was simply small and sleepy, as if he had only just woken up.

“Hello,” Lily said. “I’m Lily. Are you all right?”

Glimmer scratched the leaf on his head and thought for a moment.

“I think so,” he said slowly. “I just don’t remember why the lantern went out. There was moss. Then pinecones. Then… hmm… perhaps I forgot myself for a moment.”

Lily nodded. She was often a little shy when she met someone new. But she listened carefully. And when she listened, she felt braver.

“Then we can look at it together,” she suggested softly.

Glimmer smiled. “That would be very nice.”

Lily set the lantern on the soft moss beside the path. Then she took a thin leaf from her little bag, one she had found nearby. It was clean and springy.

“We can gently wipe away the moss with this,” she said.

“What a lovely idea!” cried Glimmer, and the light on his body glowed a little brighter.

But first, they did not do anything quickly. They simply sat beside the lantern. The moss beneath them was soft as a pillow. The air smelled of earth, leaves, and the cool morning. Lily held the leaf like a soft cloth and carefully brushed it along the edge of the lantern.

“Here?” she asked.

“Yes, exactly there,” Glimmer nodded.

They gently brushed away the little bits of moss. Then Lily blew off a tiny petal caught on top. They did everything slowly. They were in no hurry.

“It’s so peaceful here,” Lily said.

“Yes,” Glimmer agreed. “Light does not like waking up in a hurry.”

Lily looked at him and smiled. She did not feel quite as shy as before. Helping was easier than she had thought. She only had to ask and be gentle.

When the lantern was clean, it looked prettier. Still, it did not shine.

Glimmer frowned just a little, but not sadly. He looked thoughtful instead.

“Now I remember,” he said. “I was in a hurry, and I left the lantern in the moss without taking care of it. Perhaps that is why it grew tired and went out.”

When Things Start to Change

Lily nodded. “Oh. So it isn’t broken. It only needed to rest.”

“Exactly,” Glimmer said with relief.

Then Lily suggested, “Let’s sit very quietly for a little while.”

Glimmer sat beside the lantern. Lily sat down too. They were both quiet. Not only with their mouths, but with their hands and feet as well. Everything around them was soft and peaceful.

And then something happened.

First, a tiny dot of light appeared inside the lantern. Then another. And then they became a gentle, warm glow. It was not a bright flash. It was only a soft beam, slowly spreading out in every direction, like morning sunshine spilling across the grass.

“Look!” Lily whispered.

Glimmer’s eyes lit up. His body glowed a little warmer than before.

“He’s waking up,” he said with a smile.

The lantern glowed quietly and beautifully. Not too brightly. Just enough. Its light shone on the moss, the pinecones, and Lily’s yellow boots. Everything looked soft and lovely.

“Thank you, Lily,” Glimmer said. “Without you, I might not have remembered.”

Lily blushed with happiness. “I only helped a little.”

“Even a little thing can be big,” Glimmer said seriously, though he was smiling.

Lily tucked those words into her heart like a small warm ball. She felt braver. Not because she had stopped being shy, but because helping someone made her shyness feel smaller.

They sat by the glowing lantern for a little while longer. Then Lily raised her head.

“Listen,” she said. “Over there, by that stump in the moss… can you see something small?”

Glimmer looked around. His little light trembled gently, as if an eye were peeking around a corner.

“I can,” he said quietly. “A little forest sign. It is simply standing there. Perhaps it is waiting for help too.”

Lily looked at it. It was not a challenge she had to fear right away. It was only another little mystery.

“We can look at it tomorrow,” she suggested.

“Yes,” Glimmer agreed. “Tomorrow is a good day for new discoveries.”

Lily smiled. She stood up and brushed off her knees. They left the lantern glowing in the moss a little longer so that it could rest. Then she slowly set off for home along the path. Her steps were light and quiet.

As she walked, she repeated to herself what had happened that day: something that has gone dark is not necessarily broken. Help can be small. And when you help someone, your heart feels warmer.

Behind her, Glimmer stayed beside the lantern and smiled at the gentle forest. A small light shone in the moss, and by the old stump waited another tiny sign that no one had yet explained.

And the forest went on whispering contentedly, quiet and kind, until the next day.
