Jeho okrúhle telíčko svietilo teplým zlatým svetlom, no dnes svietilo len jemne, akoby aj on počúval ticho lesa.
Dievča zrniečko jemne podalo späť do drobných mravčích nožičiek.
„Ach jaj, ach jaj,“ vzdychala.
Lili opatrne nadvihla list.
Lili ho zdvihla do dlaní.
„A nezabudnúť byť trpezlivý,“ pridala veverička.
„A ešte krajšia pomoc.“
Na mäkkej cestičke zostalo všetko pokojné, bezpečné a teplé. A pod starým gaštanom svietilo malé svetielko už celkom spokojne, akoby sa mu konečne vrátil domov jeho najmilší kamienok.
The Forest of Little Lights, part 7: The Little Light in the Chestnut
The Story Begins
At the edge of the magical forest, the morning felt soft as moss. Lily walked along a narrow path in her green raincoat, with her tiny yellow boots, and her leaf-shaped bag swinging at her side. Beside her, Glimmer floated along. His round little body shone with warm golden light, but today it glowed only softly, as if he too was listening to the quiet forest.
“Look,” he whispered suddenly. “There is a big chestnut tree.”
In front of them stood an old tree with a thick trunk and roots that rested on the ground like soft hands. Between the leaves and the moss, a tiny silver line sparkled.
Lily bent down. “It is shiny,” she said softly. “As if something went here.”
Glimmer moved closer to the roots. His light flickered gently for a moment. Then, under one root, a small little light showed itself. It was so tiny that it could fit in a hand. It pulsed for a while, and then it quickly hid deeper in the shade of the moss.
“Did you see that?” asked Glimmer, and his eyes shone with curiosity.
“Yes,” Lily nodded. “But it seemed like it was hiding.”
It was quiet by the roots. The air smelled of earth and leaves. The little light did not show again. It was only as if something sad was trembling under the ground.
“Maybe it is looking for something,” said Lily.
Glimmer lowered his gaze. “But what?”
Just then, the girl noticed a tiny shiny stone on the ground. It lay between two green leaves and reflected the light like a drop of water. Lily reached for it, but before she could pick it up, a soft wind blew, and the stone rolled under a leaf.
“Oh,” she whispered. “At least I know where to look.”
Before they could decide what to do, they suddenly heard a quiet rustle from the path. A little ant moved in the grass. It carried a seed that was too big for it. Step by step, it tried to cross the soft moss, but the seed kept slipping.
“Oh dear,” sighed the ant. “I cannot get it home.”
Lily looked shyly at her boots for a moment. Then she knelt down and held out her hand. “Can I help you?”
“Yes,” squeaked the ant.
Carefully, the girl gave the seed back into the ant’s tiny feet. The ant smiled as much as an ant can smile.
“Thank you,” it said. “When I came this way, I saw a shiny line by the trunk. It went that way.”
At that, Glimmer grew a little brighter. His light did not jump up at once or become big. It was just calmer and clearer.
“See?” he whispered. “When we help, the light feels better.”
Lily nodded. “Then let’s go on.”
Soon they were walking under the lower branches of the chestnut tree. The leaves above them rustled, and the moss was like a cushion. Meanwhile, a cheerful grumbling sound came from between the roots. It was a squirrel with a fluffy tail, running here and there.
“Oh no, oh no,” it sighed. “Where is my treasure of cones?”
“My treasure of cones?” Lily repeated.
The squirrel nodded. “I hid them here under the tree. But now I cannot find them. I searched the moss, the leaves, and this little hole by the root.”
Glimmer floated a little higher. “Maybe they are close,” he said.
Lily remembered the shiny line on the ground. “First, let’s look where we saw the glow,” she suggested. Her voice was soft, but sure.
When Things Start to Change
The squirrel tilted its head, thinking. Then it smiled. “Good idea. I will help you.”
Together they bent over the moss, looked under the leaves, and gently moved a small twig aside. Suddenly, under one big leaf, something shone.
“There!” cried the squirrel.
Carefully, Lily lifted the leaf. Under it lay a small stone. It was smooth, gray-white, and shiny like a drop of moonlight. Just then, a soft hum came from under the root.
The little light.
The small light that had been hiding until now slowly came up from the moss. It did not shine strongly, but it was braver now. It was as if it felt that something important was near.
“That is it,” whispered Glimmer. “Its favorite stone.”
Lily picked it up in her hands. It felt cool and smooth. The ant smiled, and the squirrel sat down happily on a root.
“Now we know why it was hiding,” said Lily.
Then they all went back to the big chestnut tree. Under the roots, the quiet was still calm. The girl placed the stone exactly where a tiny hollow shone in the moss.
At first, nothing happened. But after a while, the little light blinked softly. Then it blinked again. And finally, it shone with a quiet, warm glow.
“Oh,” breathed Glimmer. His own light matched the little light right away and spread softly over the ground.
The chestnut leaves trembled gently. The bark of the tree seemed to shine with a soft golden color. On a nearby branch, one small forest lantern, which had been dim before, also lit up.
The ant lifted its feelers. The squirrel held its tail close and looked content. And the little light did not want to hide anymore.
“It is shining now,” it said in a soft voice, as if this were a great joy.
Lily smiled. “We only had to put the stone back where it belonged.”
“And help along the way,” said the ant.
“And not forget to be patient,” added the squirrel.
Glimmer snuggled closer to Lily. His light was calm and soft. “When we help where help is needed, even light can find its way home,” he said happily.
Under the chestnut tree, a sweet silence came. It was not empty, but full of gentle glow. Lily, Glimmer, the ant, and the squirrel stood for a while and watched the little light shining under the roots and the chestnut tree glowing softly, as if it were smiling.
Then Lily breathed in the fresh forest air and said quietly, “That was a lovely search.”
“Yes,” said Glimmer. “And an even lovelier help.”
On the soft path, everything stayed calm, safe, and warm. And under the old chestnut tree, the little light shone happily at last, as if its dearest stone had come home again.
