„Zapíšem si to,“ povedala Ela a vytiahla svoj malý notes.

Cesta ich zaviedla do nevyužívanej časti školy.

Hlas nebol hlasný, no v tichej chodbe znel veľmi zvláštne.

„Počuješ to?“ zašepkala Ela.

Tomáš prikývol. „Áno. Ale neotváraj nič, dobre?“

Obaja zostali stáť bez pohybu. O chvíľu sa ozval ten istý hlas znova. Tentoraz ešte slabšie. Znel skôr ako útržok vety než celé slová.

Ela pocítila jemné mravenčenie v rukách. Nebola to príjemná hrôza, skôr prekvapenie.

On poznal starú budovu najlepšie zo všetkých dospelých.

Ela mu podala papierik zo Sovieho klubu.

„Jednoduchý a chytrý. Keď ešte neboli moderné telefóny a zvončeky, ľudia si pomáhali takto.“

Priložil k nemu dlaň a potichu zavolal: „Haló?“

Z vedľajšej miestnosti sa hneď ozvalo slabé: „Haló… haló…“

Deti sa zarazili, potom sa rozžiarili.

Keď sa veci začnú meniť

„To je ono!“ vykríkla Ela, už oveľa tichšie. „Naozaj to prechádza cez stenu!“

„A teraz to počujete aj vy,“ povedal Karol spokojne.

A Soví klub o tom asi vedel a nechal vám sem odkaz.“

Ela si symbol okamžite nakreslila do notesu. „Toto je nové,“ povedala nadšene. „Niekto sem prišiel po nás.“

Karol sa pousmial. „Alebo pred vami, a nechal vám smerovanie. Tento znak ukazuje k ďalšiemu miestu v starej časti školy.“

„Kam presne?“ spýtal sa Tomáš.

Školník len pokrčil plecami. „To už budete musieť zistiť sami. Ale bezpečne. Bez otvárania múrov, bez tlačenia na steny a bez zbytočného hluku.“

„To vieme,“ povedala Ela hneď. „Budeme opatrní.“

„A zvedaví,“ dodal Tomáš.

„To je dobrá dvojica,“ zasmial sa Karol. „Stačí držať zvedavosť vedľa opatrnosti.“

Tieto slová sa deťom páčili. Boli jednoduché a zneli prirodzene.

Nebolo to nič magické, iba šikovné staré riešenie.

A Soví klub o tom vedel.“

„Do ďalšej zamknutej miestnosti v starej časti školy.

„A my pôjdeme,“ dodal Tomáš.

Karol im ešte zamával. „Len opatrne,“ povedal.

Secrets of the Old School, part 7: The Voice Behind the Wall

The Story Begins

Ella was just writing down the last clue from the previous search when another message from the Owl Club appeared in the old school hallway. It was tucked behind a cracked notice board near a tall window, and it looked like a small note folded into the shape of an owl. Thomas carefully opened it, and both children leaned closer.

On the paper, it said: “When the wall whispers, do not hurry. Listen to the silence.” Under the words was a simple drawing of an old wall and, next to it, a few little circles, as if someone wanted to show a place where they should stop and listen. Ella smiled, but her eyes were shining with curiosity.

“It’s a riddle,” Thomas whispered. “But maybe it is also a real place.”

“I’ll write it down,” Ella said, and took out her small notebook. She quickly drew the owl, the wall, and the circles. Then she put the paper note into her zip pocket so it would not get lost.

Their path led them to the unused part of the school. It was quieter there than anywhere else. Their steps sounded soft, and the light from the high windows fell across the floor in long stripes. The walls were old and a little rough to touch, and some doors stayed closed for whole days. Ella felt as if time moved more slowly there.

“There it is,” Thomas said after a while and stopped by a plaster wall. “Look, just like on the picture.”

Ella stepped closer. There was nothing strange on the wall, only old plaster and a narrow strip of lighter paint. Then, suddenly, both children froze.

A voice came from the other side of the wall.

It was muffled, as if someone were speaking through a pillow or a very thick blanket. The children became still. The voice was not loud, but in the quiet hall it sounded very strange.

“Do you hear that?” Ella whispered.

Thomas nodded. “Yes. But don’t open anything, okay?”

They stood without moving. A moment later, the same voice sounded again. This time it was even weaker. It seemed more like a piece of a sentence than real words.

A gentle tingle ran through Ella’s hands. It was not a scary feeling, only surprise. Still, she tried not to step back. She wanted to find out what was happening, but she did not want to frighten anyone.

“Maybe there is someone behind the wall who needs help,” she said quietly.

Thomas thought for a moment. “Or maybe it is some old sound trick. Something from the school.”

Luckily, they remembered Caretaker Karl. He knew the old building better than any other adult. So the children ran only to the nearest door and called him, careful not to disturb the rest of the school.

Karl came after a while. He did not look scared or strict. He simply wiped his hands on his work jacket and looked at them with his tired but kind eyes.

“Well then, what happened, you two explorers?” he asked with a smile.

“We heard a voice behind the wall,” Thomas blurted out. “But we can’t see anyone.”

Ella handed him the Owl Club note. Karl read it, then looked at the wall and slowly nodded.

“Aha,” he said. “So you found the old place.”

The children stared at him in surprise.

“The old place?” Ella asked.

Karl leaned one hand on the door frame. “This school is very old. People built it in a different way long ago. Some walls are not full, but hollow. And in some places there were small spaces or tubes that could carry a voice from one room to another.”

When Things Start to Change

Thomas blinked. “Like an old telephone?”

“Exactly,” Karl said with a smile. “Simple and clever. Before modern phones and bells, people helped each other like that.”

Ella looked back at the wall. “So the voice did not belong to someone hiding there?”

“No,” Karl answered calmly. “It was more like the old school itself. The sound could travel through a hollow space or a tube, and then it echoed so strangely that it seemed like a whisper behind the wall.”

Karl then led them a little farther along the narrow hall and showed them a small metal ending near the base of the wall. It was almost hidden in the plaster. He placed his hand near it and softly called, “Hello?”

At once, a weak “Hello… hello…” came from the next room.

The children stared, then their faces lit up.

“That’s it!” Ella cried, much more quietly this time. “It really goes through the wall!”

“And now you hear it too,” Karl said calmly. “See? No ghost. Just an old, clever system.”

Thomas looked once more at the opening and then at the wall. “So the voice was not a person behind the wall?”

“No,” Karl said. “It was only sound from an old hollow space. And the Owl Club probably knew about it and left you the note here.”

Ella looked at the plaster again. At one point, she noticed something small near its edge.

“Ella, look!” Thomas called.

On the light patch there was a small owl sign. It was not big or easy to notice. That was why it was so easy to miss. It looked wise rather than scary. It was as if someone only wanted to show the way forward.

Ella drew the symbol into her notebook at once. “This is new,” she said excitedly. “Someone came here after us.”

Karl smiled. “Or before you, and left a direction for you. This sign points to another place in the old part of the school.”

“Where exactly?” Thomas asked.

The caretaker only shrugged. “You will have to find that out yourselves. But safely. No opening walls, no pushing on walls, and no unnecessary noise.”

“We know,” Ella said right away. “We’ll be careful.”

“And curious,” Thomas added.

“That’s a good pair,” Karl laughed. “Just keep curiosity beside caution.”

The children liked those words. They were simple and sounded right.

In the end, all three moved a few steps farther down the hall, where there was more light. Karl once again showed how such hollow spaces once helped people at school. Sometimes messages were sent through them, and sometimes a voice traveled so well that another room could hear it. It was not magic at all, just a smart old solution.

Ella looked at the high windows and imagined students from many years ago. Maybe they stood right there, whispering messages and laughing because no one could hear them. Maybe they had their own club too, and they gave signs on the walls.

Meanwhile, Thomas tried to put everything together in his head. “So the voice behind the wall was not someone hidden there,” he said slowly. “It was only sound from an old hollow space. And the Owl Club knew it.”

“That seems to be it,” Karl agreed.

At last, the children relaxed. Ella let out a breath and felt her shoulders become less tense. Thomas even smiled wider than before. The mystery was solved, but not in the way they expected. Still, it was a good ending. Without fear.

“I’m glad we didn’t open anything by ourselves,” Ella admitted.

“So am I,” said Thomas. “At first I thought someone was behind the wall. Now this explanation is much better.”

An Important Moment

Karl looked at them kindly. “That is why it is good to listen first and act later. And when you are not sure, call an adult who knows the building.”

Ella nodded. She looked again at the owl sign. In the small drawing, there was something that called her onward. Not fear. More like a challenge.

“Where do you think it leads?” Thomas murmured.

Karl turned toward the darker end of the hall. “To another locked room in the old part of the school. No one goes there anymore. If there is another sign on the door, maybe another clue is waiting for you.”

Ella imagined a mysterious room closed for many years. At once, many questions came to her mind. What was hidden there? Who left the clue? Why had it been locked for so long? The unanswered questions did not scare her. They made her want to search on.

“Then that’s for another day,” she said at last. “We’ve had enough for today.”

Thomas nodded. “And today we found out that walls sometimes talk only because they are old and hollow.”

“Exactly,” Karl smiled.

As they walked back down the hall, their steps were no longer tense like at the beginning. The air felt lighter. The old school around them did not seem cold now, but more like a place that remembered many stories.

At the end of the hall, Ella stopped and turned around. On the wall stayed the small owl symbol, showing the way to the next mystery. It was quiet, simple, and calm.

The girl smiled. “I think the Owl Club will lead us somewhere else too.”

“And we’ll go,” Thomas added.

Karl waved to them one more time. “Just be careful,” he said. “Secrets are interesting when you listen to them with your head.”

Ella held her notebook more tightly against her. Thomas shifted his backpack onto the other shoulder. And both of them walked away with a good feeling, because they had done something important: they had been afraid for a moment, then stayed calm, and finally found the explanation.

The old wall behind them did not seem scary anymore. It was only another part of the school, one that held memories. And somewhere in the old wing, behind the new owl sign, another clue was waiting.
