„Zapíšem si to,“ povedala Ela a vytiahla svoj malý notes.

Cesta ich zaviedla do nevyužívanej časti školy.

„Počuješ to?“ zašepkala Ela.

Tomáš prikývol. „Áno. Ale neotváraj nič, dobre?“

Obaja zostali stáť bez pohybu. O chvíľu sa ozval ten istý hlas znova. Tentoraz ešte slabšie. Znel skôr ako útržok vety než celé slová.

Ela pocítila jemné mravenčenie v rukách. Nebola to príjemná hrôza, skôr prekvapenie.

On poznal starú budovu najlepšie zo všetkých dospelých.

Ela mu podala papierik zo Sovieho klubu.

„Aha,“ povedal. „Tak vy ste našli staré miesto.“

Deti naňho prekvapene pozreli.

„Staré miesto?“ opýtala sa Ela.

Karol a pokojné vysvetlenie

„Jednoduchý a chytrý. Keď ešte neboli moderné telefóny a zvončeky, ľudia si pomáhali takto.“

Nebolo to strašidelné ani nebezpečné. Iba zvláštne. A trochu krásne.

Tajomstvo dutiny a trubice

Ela si symbol okamžite nakreslila do notesu. „Toto je nové,“ povedala nadšene. „Niekto sem prišiel po nás.“

Karol sa pousmial. „Alebo pred vami, a nechal vám smerovanie. Tento znak ukazuje k ďalšiemu miestu v starej časti školy.“

„Kam presne?“ spýtal sa Tomáš.

Školník len pokrčil plecami. „To už budete musieť zistiť sami. Ale bezpečne. Bez otvárania múrov, bez tlačenia na steny a bez zbytočného hluku.“

„To vieme,“ povedala Ela hneď. „Budeme opatrní.“

„A zvedaví,“ dodal Tomáš.

Nebolo to nič magické, iba šikovné staré riešenie.

A Sovie kluby o tom vedeli.“

„Do ďalšej zamknutej miestnosti v starej časti školy.

Pocit úľavy a nová cesta

„A my pôjdeme,“ dodal Tomáš.

Karol im ešte zamával. „Len opatrne,“ povedal.

Secrets of the Old School, part 7: The Voice Behind the Wall

A New Owl Club Clue

Ella was just writing down the last clue from their previous search when another message from the Owl Club appeared in the old school corridor. It was tucked behind a cracked notice board near a tall window. The note was folded into the shape of an owl. Thomas carefully opened it, and both children leaned closer.

On the paper, it said: “When the wall whispers, do not hurry. Listen to the silence.” Under the words was a simple drawing of an old wall and, beside it, small circles, as if someone wanted to point to a place where they should stop and listen. Ella smiled, but her eyes also shone with curiosity.

“That’s a riddle,” Thomas whispered. “But maybe it is also a real place.”

“I’ll write it down,” Ella said, and took out her small notebook. She quickly drew the owl, the wall, and the circles. Then she slipped the paper into her zip pocket so it would not get lost.

Their path led them to a part of the school that was not used much. It was quieter there than anywhere else. Their footsteps sounded soft, and the light from the high windows fell across the floor in long strips. The walls were old and a little rough to the touch, and some doors stayed shut for days. Ella felt as if time moved more slowly there.

The Muffled Voice Behind the Wall

“Here it is,” Thomas said after a while and stopped beside a plaster wall. “Look, just like in the picture.”

Ella came closer. There was nothing strange on the wall, only old plaster and a thin strip of lighter paint. Just then, both of them froze.

A voice came from the other side of the wall.

It was muffled, as if someone were speaking through a pillow or a very thick blanket. The children became quiet. The voice was not loud, but in the silent corridor it sounded very strange.

“Do you hear that?” Ella whispered.

Thomas nodded. “Yes. But don’t open anything, okay?”

They stood still without moving. After a moment, the same voice sounded again. This time it was even weaker. It was more like a piece of a sentence than real words.

A soft tingle ran through Ella’s hands. It was not a nice kind of fear, but surprise. Even so, she did not want to step back. She wanted to understand what was happening, but she did not want to frighten anyone.

“Maybe there is someone behind the wall who needs help,” she said quietly.

Thomas thought for a moment. “Or maybe it is some old sound trick. Something from the school.”

Luckily, they remembered Caretaker Karl. He knew the old building better than any other adult. So the children ran only to the nearest door and called him, careful not to disturb the rest of the school.

Karl and the Calm Explanation

Karl came after a little while. He did not look scared or strict. He only wiped his hands on his work jacket and looked at them with his tired but kind eyes.

“So what happened, you two explorers?” he asked with a smile.

“We heard a voice behind the wall,” Thomas said quickly. “But we can’t see anyone.”

Ella handed him the Owl Club note. Karl read it, then looked at the wall and slowly nodded.

“Oh,” he said. “So you found an old place.”

The children looked at him in surprise.

“An old place?” Ella asked.

Karl leaned one hand on the door frame and explained calmly, as if he were talking about something very normal. “This school is very old. Long ago, people built things differently. Some walls are not solid. They are hollow. And in some places, there were small spaces or tubes that could carry a voice from one room to another.”

Thomas blinked. “Like an old telephone?”

“Exactly,” Karl said with a smile. “Simple and clever. Before modern phones and bells, people used to help each other like this.”

Ella looked back at the wall. “So the voice did not belong to someone hiding there?”

“No,” Karl answered calmly. “It was more like the old school itself. The sound could travel through a hollow space or a tube, and then it echoed in such a strange way that it sounded like a whisper behind the wall.”

The Secret of the Hollow Space and Tube

The children looked at each other. Slowly, the tension left their shoulders. It was not scary or dangerous. Only strange. And a little beautiful.

“That’s why it sounded so weird,” Ella breathed, and her smile returned.

“And then,” Thomas added, “the Owl Club probably used it for messages!”

Karl nodded. “That is very possible. Whoever knows old places can hide a secret. And sometimes also the right message for the person who should find it.”

The boy bent closer to the wall and carefully studied it. Then he noticed something tiny near the edge of the plaster.

“Ella, look!”

On the light spot there was a small owl symbol. It was not big or flashy. Because of that, it was easy to miss. It looked wise rather than scary, as if someone only wanted to show the way forward.

Ella drew the symbol in her notebook at once. “This is new,” she said excitedly. “Someone came here after us.”

Karl smiled a little. “Or before you, and left you a direction. This sign leads to another place in the old part of the school.”

“Where exactly?” Thomas asked.

The caretaker just shrugged. “You will have to find that out yourselves. But safely. No opening walls, no pushing on them, and no unnecessary noise.”

“We know,” Ella said right away. “We’ll be careful.”

The Owl Mark on the Plaster

“And curious,” Thomas added.

“That is a good pair,” Karl laughed. “Curiosity is useful when you hold it by the hand with carefulness.”

The children liked those words. They were simple, but true.

In the end, all three of them moved a few steps farther down the corridor, where there was more light. Karl explained once more how such hollow spaces used to help people in the school. Sometimes messages were sent through them. Sometimes a voice was carried through so another room could hear it. It was not magic at all, only a smart old solution.

Ella looked at the tall windows and imagined pupils from many years ago. Maybe they stood right there, whispering messages and laughing because no one could hear them. Maybe they also had their own club, giving each other signs on the walls.

Meanwhile, Thomas tried to put everything together in his head. “So the voice behind the wall was not a real person,” he said slowly. “It was only sound from an old hollow space. And the Owl Clubs knew about it.”

“That seems so,” Karl agreed.

At last, the children relaxed. Ella let out a breath and felt her shoulders grow loose. Thomas even smiled wider than before. The mystery did not end the way they had expected, but it ended well. Without fear.

Relief and a New Path

“I’m glad we didn’t open anything ourselves,” Ella admitted.

“Me too,” said Thomas. “At first I thought someone was behind the wall. Now this makes much more sense.”

Karl gave them a kind look. “That is exactly why it is good to listen first and act later. And if you are not sure, call an adult who knows the building.”

Ella nodded. She looked again at the owl sign. The small drawing was full of a quiet pull that wanted to lead her onward. Not fear. More like a challenge.

“Where do you think it goes?” Thomas muttered.

Karl turned toward the darker end of the corridor. “To another locked room in the old part of the school. No one has gone there for a long time. If there is another sign on the door, maybe another clue is waiting for you.”

Ella imagined a mysterious room, closed for many years. Right away, many questions came to her mind. What was hidden inside? Who left the clue there? Why was it locked for so long? The unanswered questions did not make her uneasy. They only made her want to keep searching.

“Then that is for another day,” she said at last. “Today we have enough.”

Thomas nodded. “And today we learned that walls sometimes speak only because they are old and hollow.”

The Last Clue

“Exactly,” Karl said with a smile.

As they walked back down the corridor, their steps were no longer tense like they had been at the beginning. The air seemed lighter. The old school around them did not feel cold now. It felt more like a place that remembered many stories.

At the end of the corridor, Ella stopped and looked back. On the wall stayed the small owl symbol, pointing toward the next secret. It was quiet, simple, and calm.

The girl smiled. “I think the Owl Clubs will lead us somewhere else too.”

“And we’ll go,” Thomas added.

Karl waved to them once more. “Just be careful,” he said. “Secrets like brave children, but they like listeners even more.”

Ella held her notebook tighter against her body. Thomas shifted his backpack onto his other shoulder. And both of them walked away with the good feeling that they had done something important: they had been afraid for a moment, then stayed calm, and in the end found an explanation.

The old wall behind them did not seem frightening anymore. It was only another part of the school that kept memories. And somewhere in the old wing, beyond the new owl sign, another clue was waiting.
