Práve ukladala svoje kocky do krabice, keď si niečo všimla.
Pod parapetom bliklo jemné svetielko.
Dievčatko prestalo ukladať kocky. Naklonilo hlavu na bok.
„Mami?“ zavolala.
Kľúč bol chladný, no o chvíľu jej dlaň príjemne zahrial.
No hviezdny kľúč v jej dlani zablikal ešte raz.
Opatrne ho priložila k dierke. Pasoval presne.
Cvak.
Dvierka sa pootvorili.
Za nimi nebola hlina ani korene. Bol tam maličký svet. Viedla ním cestička z hladkých kamienkov. Po bokoch rástli zelené listy, niektoré guľaté, iné dlhé a kučeravé. Nad nimi viseli drobné lampášiky, ktoré svietili mäkkým zlatým svetlom.
Mína otvorila oči dokorán.
„Haló?“ povedala potichu.
Zvnútra sa ozvalo tiché: „Bzzip!“
Potom z dvierok vyletelo niečo zlaté. Malo okrúhle teplé telíčko, dve priesvitné krídla a malé čierne očká.
Sotva svietilo.
Bolo ľahučké a teplé.
Na konci kamienkovej cestičky stála malá zlatá miska. Mína ju predtým takmer nevidela, lebo ju zakrýval pokrútený list. Teraz list opatrne odsunula a zbadala v miske prázdne miestečko v tvare malej hviezdy.
„Sem patríš,“ povedala.
Položila svetielko do misky.
„Hotovo!“ zvolal Piko a veselo jej pošteklil ucho krídlom.
Opatrne si ho schovala do vrecka kardigánu.
Neskôr ležala v posteli, prikrytá až po bradu. Starý kvetináč stál pri okne úplne obyčajne. Len mesiac hladil jeho okraj bledým svetlom.
Mína sa dotkla vrecka, v ktorom čakal strieborný kľúč.
Možno sa raz znovu rozsvieti, pomyslela si.
A potom zavrela oči.

Mina and the Star Key, part 1: The Key That Glowed
The Story Begins
The evening was quiet and soft like Mina’s blanket. Outside the window, it was getting dark. In the room, a small lamp shone, and on the windowsill stood an old clay flower pot with thick green leaves.
Mina sat on the rug in her teal dress. She wore her mustard cardigan, and her red boots were still on her feet. She was putting her blocks into a box when she noticed something.
Under the windowsill, a tiny light blinked.
The girl stopped putting away the blocks. She tilted her head.
“Mama?” she called. “Do we have a firefly in there?”
From the kitchen came Mama’s calm voice. “A firefly would not be in the room in the evening. Look, Mina.”
Mina crawled closer. The light was not big. It was very small, just like a dot at the end of a pencil. It shone silver and sparkled softly.
Under the windowsill lay a key.
It was very tiny. Its head was shaped like a star, and the thin tooth shone like a drop of dew. Mina picked it up with two fingers.
The key was cold, but after a moment her hand felt warm and nice.
“How pretty,” she whispered.
When she turned it, the silver star shone again, very softly. Not bright. Just enough for Mina to see. The light stretched toward the old flower pot.
Then she saw something she had never seen before.
On the side of the pot were little doors. They were brown, the same as the clay wall around them. They had a small round hole for a key.
Mina knelt beside them. “Were you here all the time?” she asked the flower pot.
The leaves above the little doors did not move. But the star key in her hand blinked once more.
Carefully, she put it into the hole. It fit exactly.
Click.
The little doors opened a crack.
Behind them was not clay or roots. There was a tiny world. A path of smooth pebbles ran through it. On both sides grew green leaves, some round, some long and curly. Above them hung tiny lanterns that glowed with soft golden light.
Mina opened her eyes wide.
“Hello?” she said quietly.
From inside came a soft sound. “Bzzip!”
Then something golden flew out of the doors. It had a round warm body, two clear wings, and small black eyes. It circled Mina’s nose, so she giggled, and then it landed on her shoulder.
“Piko!” the little creature said.
“I’m Mina,” she said. “Do you live in the flower pot?”
Piko waved his little wings with joy. “Behind the doors. Small world.”
But then his wings dropped a little. He pointed inside with one paw.
“Something is missing,” he said.
Mina looked at the pebble path. One lantern was hanging crookedly. The leaves near it were all mixed up, and at the doors there was a small gap.
“Won’t the doors close?” she asked.
“They can’t,” buzzed Piko. “Light gone. Into the leaves.”
The tiny creature pointed into the green tangle. Then he stopped, waved one paw to one side, and then to the other.
“Where exactly?” Mina asked.
Piko scratched his round belly. “Hmm. There… or there.”
Mina did not laugh at him. She only nodded. “Then I’ll look.”
The doors were just big enough for her to lean into the little world. She left her red boots on the rug by the windowsill. Piko sat on her shoulder, and his golden glow lit her way.
First, the girl lifted one big leaf. Under it was only a round pebble with a white dot.
When Things Start to Change
Then she looked behind two curly leaves. There, a tiny snail shell was sleeping. Mina left it alone.
“Not here,” she said.
Piko buzzed softly. “Look slowly.”
Mina wanted to move the leaves all at once. She was about to reach out, but then she saw a tiny glimmer near the edge. If she moved the leaves too fast, maybe the light would hide deeper.
So she stopped.
She took a breath and lifted just one leaf with one finger. Under it was another. And under that one, a tiny light trembled, round like a pea. It shone only a little. It was tangled among thin green stems.
“Oh,” Mina whispered. “I found you.”
The little light moved a bit farther.
“Don’t be afraid,” she said gently. “I will not grab you quickly.”
She opened her hand by the leaves and waited. Piko did not even make a sound. In the little world, only the leaves made a soft rustle.
After a while, the light rolled from one stem to another. Then it touched Mina’s hand.
It was light and warm.
At the end of the pebble path stood a small golden bowl. Mina had almost not seen it because a bent leaf covered it. Now she moved the leaf carefully and saw a little empty place in the bowl, shaped like a small star.
“You belong here,” she said.
She placed the little light into the bowl.
At once, everything shone a little brighter. The lantern that had hung crookedly straightened itself. The pebbles on the path settled calmly next to each other. The leaves stopped getting mixed up, and the little doors behind Mina moved quietly closer to their frame.
“All done!” Piko called, and he tickled her ear with one wing.
Mina laughed. “You showed me the way. But I found the light.”
Piko nodded seriously. “Good eyes, Mina.”
Then he sat on her finger, and together they went back to the doors. The little world looked calm now. The golden bowl glowed among the leaves like a tiny star in the grass.
Mina pulled the key out of the hole. The doors closed very softly. Click.
At that moment, Mama came from the kitchen with a soft blanket over her arm. She smiled at her daughter by the windowsill.
“It is time to take off your boots,” she said.
“Yes, Mama,” Mina answered.
Piko hid behind one leaf, but his golden light waved to her once more from under the edge of the doors.
The star key was not shining anymore. Still, Mina could feel it in her hand, small and important. Carefully, she put it into her cardigan pocket.
Later, she lay in bed, covered up to her chin. The old flower pot stood by the window, looking completely ordinary. Only the moon touched its edge with pale light.
Mina touched the pocket where the silver key waited.
Maybe it will glow again one day, she thought.
Then she closed her eyes. In the safe room, near Mama, she dreamed of tiny doors and little lights that knew how to find the way home.
