The Forest of Little Lights, Part 4: A Little Light Beneath the Leaves
Lily and Glimmer find a frightened little light hiding beneath autumn leaves and show it that peace can help fear fade.

The Forest of Little Lights, Part 4: A Little Light Beneath the Leaves
The Story Begins
Lily walked slowly along the edge of the magical forest. She wore her soft green raincoat, tiny yellow boots, and a leaf-shaped bag over her shoulder. Glimmer floated beside her. His round little body glowed warmly and calmly today, blinking softly now and then as if he were smiling.
“The forest is very quiet today,” Lily said, looking at the soft carpet of leaves beneath the trees.
“Quiet can be good,” murmured Glimmer. “Quiet can hear little things too.”
Lily smiled. She liked moments like this. The forest always seemed like a great book full of secrets that showed themselves only to those who knew how to stop and listen.
Suddenly, Glimmer glowed a little brighter and drifted towards a pile of leaves beside the path. Lily followed him. The leaves were soft, golden, brown, and red. They looked like a blanket for a little sleeper.
“Here,” Glimmer whispered.
Lily bent down and looked carefully. Then she saw it. Beneath the leaves, a tiny, faint light flickered for a moment. It was only a little tremble, like someone who was frightened but not ready to run away yet.
Lily fell quiet at once. She did not even breathe loudly. Sitting back on her heels, she whispered, “We will not disturb it.”
Glimmer nodded. His light softened too.
Something small was beneath the leaves. Something alive. But what was it?
Lily looked carefully at Glimmer. He pointed to a tiny patch of leaves, then moved back so that everything could stay calm.
“May we?” Lily asked very softly.
“Just a little,” Glimmer answered.
With two fingers, Lily gently moved aside a few leaves. No more. There, beneath them, sat a tiny forest light. It was smaller than a nut. It had a round little body, a faint golden glow, and big, timid eyes. Its little light trembled like a candle flame in the wind.
“Oh,” Lily whispered. “You were hiding.”
The little light pressed itself closer to the leaves. It did not come out. It only trembled a little.
“Do not be afraid,” said Glimmer, so softly that he sounded like a gentle breeze. “We are friends.”
But the little light kept trembling.
Lily remembered that the wind had rushed more loudly through the trees that morning. Perhaps it had frightened the little light. Perhaps it had hidden afterwards and waited for the forest to grow quiet again.
“That is all right,” Lily said gently. “You do not have to fly out yet.”
Just then, a twig cracked behind them. Lily turned and saw Grandma Little. She walked slowly with a basket of pinecones, smiling her calm smile. Her silver hair was braided, and a blue shawl shimmered on her shoulders.
“What are you whispering about?” she asked quietly.
Lily pointed at the leaves. “There is a little light here. It was frightened.”
Grandma Little knelt beside them. She did not ask many questions. She only looked, nodded, and said, “When a little light is hiding, there is no need to call to it loudly. We must give it warmth, peace, and time.”
Then she opened her palm. Three warm chestnuts lay upon it. Their glow made the forest seem even softer.
“Chestnuts?” Lily wondered.
Grandma Little smiled. “Warm chestnuts in your hands, slow breathing, and a quiet song. That is a little bit of forest help.”
She showed them how to hold the chestnuts in their palms. Lily did so at once. Glimmer took a chestnut in his tiny hands too. Grandma Little held her fingers near her lips and showed them how to breathe slowly.
When Things Start to Change
Breathe in. Breathe out.
Lily breathed so slowly that it seemed to her that the leaves on the ground had grown even quieter.
“Like a soft breeze,” she whispered.
“Exactly,” said Grandma Little.
Then Lily leaned towards the little light and began to sing very softly. It was a short lullaby that had once been sung to her at home.
“Sleep, little leaf, sleep,
in the warm forest deep.
When you wake with morning light,
your little glow will shine so bright.”
Glimmer did not move. He only held the chestnut in his hands and breathed slowly, just as Grandma Little had taught him.
Grandma Little gently moved the leaves aside a little more. Just enough for the little light to see the moss, the tiny twigs, and the gentle forest day. No noise. No hurry. Only a safe space.
The little light blinked.
Then it blinked again.
At first, its light flickered faintly. Then it grew a little brighter. It was as if it were saying, “Oh. This is peaceful.”
Lily smiled. “See? You are safe.”
Glimmer’s eyes shone brightly. “Are you not afraid anymore?”
The little light trembled only a little, but not from fear. More from joy. Its glow spread into warm gold, and beneath the leaves it shone like a tiny star.
Grandma Little nodded with satisfaction. “Now it knows that no one is making it hurry.”
Lily slowly moved her hand away. The little light was no longer hiding so deeply. Slowly, it rose from the leaves. First a little way. Then a little more. At last, it floated above the moss.
“Hello,” Lily whispered.
The little light circled once above their heads, as if it were thanking them. Then it flew between the gentle branches, over the green moss, and back among the trees. It no longer shone timidly. It shone calmly. Beautifully. Without fear.
Glimmer glowed so brightly that, for a moment, he lit up the whole corner of the forest. Lily laughed. Grandma Little laughed too. It was not a loud laugh. It was a soft laugh, the kind that belongs in a forest.
“The forest remembers kindness,” said Grandma Little, lifting her basket of pinecones.
Lily watched the little light disappear among the trees. Then she turned to Grandma Little.
“So even a small light can hide and then come out again?” she asked.
“Yes,” said Grandma Little. “When it is afraid, its light does not disappear. It only waits for peace to come.”
Lily remembered those words. They were simple and beautiful.
On the way home, Lily walked beside Grandma Little. Glimmer floated above them, glowing softly like a little lantern. Leaves rustled beneath their feet, and the evening forest was peaceful. Tiny lights sparkled on the branches, as if they too were listening to the quiet song.
Lily looked back once more. The forest glowed softly and safely. It felt warm, even though it was an autumn evening. And somewhere among the leaves, the little light was no longer afraid at all.
Lily smiled, took hold of her leaf-shaped bag, and set off for home. A little warmth from the chestnuts still lingered in her hands, and Glimmer floated above her like a tiny lantern. Behind them, the forest remained quiet, kind, and full of light.
