Do triedy vošiel nový chlapec.
Tobi si nového prírastku do triedy iba opatrne prezeral.
„To nemôže byť pravda,“ vydýchla Ema.
„Pán Tieňo,“ šepla Ema a stisla ceruzku v ruke.
„Vidím to,“ povedal potichu. „Krabica nemohla len tak odísť cez dvere. Vozík ju musel presunúť inam. A tá páska… tá je dôležitá.“
Leo sa naklonil bližšie. „Ako vieš?“
Adam sa trochu začervenal. „Keď počujem viac vecí naraz, začnú do seba zapadať. Len… nechcem hovoriť príliš skoro.“
„To je v poriadku,“ usmiala sa Sára. „Môžeš nám to ukázať po svojom.“
Najprv Adam ukázal na stopu kolieska. Potom na pásku. Napokon zdvihol prst k oknu.
Potom ho trochu zabolela hlava, no už stihol zaregistrovať úzky priestor za mapou a nízku skrinku.
My vieme pravdu.“
„A vieme ju spolu,“ dodal Tobi.
Spoločne odniesli krabicu späť do triedy. Pani učiteľka Milá ich privítala pokojnými očami, akoby presne vedela, že sa deje niečo zvláštne, no chcela ich nechať nájsť riešenie samých.
„Výborne ste si poradili,“ povedala. „A hlavne ste sa neponáhľali s obvineniami.“
Leo sa trochu začervenal. „Ja som chcel hneď hádať.“
„Aj ja,“ priznala Ema a naklonila hlavu. „A to by nebolo správne.“
„Páči sa mi to,“ povedal Leo. „Tentoraz to nebol len môj nápad ani len Adamov. Bolo to spoločné.“
Adam sklopil oči, no už nevyzeral tak nesmelo ako ráno. „Vďaka, že ste mi dali šancu,“ povedal.
„My ďakujeme tebe,“ usmiala sa Sára. „Bez tvojich dielikov by sme tú záhadu asi skladali oveľa dlhšie.“
Guardians of Little Wonders, part 7: Fast Logic on a Slow Day
The Story Begins
In the classroom, the morning was quieter than usual. Sunny patches moved on the window, and Miss Mila was just finishing the topic for the class project on the board when the door opened softly.
A new boy came into the room. He had a neat backpack, a quiet step, and a gaze that first moved over the desks and only then stopped on the children. He sat down by the window. He did not look scared. He seemed careful, as if he wanted to sort everything in his head first.
“This is Adam,” said Miss Mila with a smile. “From today, he is your new classmate. And today you will work on the project in teams.”
Sara gave him a kind look. She could see that Adam was not trying to disturb anyone. Leo crossed his arms and whispered, “He speaks so quietly that I can hardly hear him.”
“Maybe he is just shy,” Emma whispered back, but then she leaned forward at once, as if she wanted to guess his secret right away.
Toby only watched the new child in the class carefully. He knew that sometimes it was better to wait a little.
Then Miss Mila pointed to the shelf by the door. “The box of supplies is ready. Without it, you cannot start the project.”
Everyone nodded. And just then, an ordinary day began to turn into a small mystery.
When the children moved to the shelf, Sara saw an empty place. The box was gone.
“That cannot be true,” breathed Emma.
Leo reached toward the cupboard right away. “Someone must have taken it.”
“Wait,” said Toby and pointed at the floor. “First let’s look properly.”
On the wood near the door, there was a strange shiny smear. It did not look dangerous. It looked odd, more like someone had quickly wiped a purple finger across it.
Sara leaned toward the window, and suddenly she knew that the hallway outside did not seem normal. The door at the end looked a little farther away than it should have been. The notice board seemed to have moved to the side. Everything was only a little crooked, but enough to confuse the eyes.
“That is not right,” muttered Leo.
“Mr Shadowmorph,” Emma whispered and squeezed her pencil in her hand.
As if called, a tall shadow in a soft purple coat flashed at the end of the hallway. He smiled, but his smile was more like a riddle than happiness.
“Where is up, where is down?” came a voice from there. “Who remembers the way when the hallway likes to play?”
“Don’t let him confuse you,” Sara said quietly. “We go after him, but together.”
The children stepped out into the hall. From far away, it looked normal. But when they moved closer, the doors near the classroom seemed to lead somewhere else. The mirror by the notice board showed a slightly shifted picture, and on the floor there were tiny wheel marks, as if a small cart had rolled there.
Adam stopped and looked at the marks so carefully that he forgot to speak. Then he noticed a piece of colored tape caught near the wall edge. A moment later, he caught a reflection of light in the window. Three small details. Three pieces of a puzzle.
Suddenly, in his eyes, tiny glowing bits lit up, as if a secret map had turned on inside his head.
“I see it,” he said quietly. “The box could not just leave through the door. A cart must have moved it somewhere else. And that tape… that matters.”
When Things Start to Change
Leo leaned closer. “How do you know?”
Adam blushed a little. “When I hear many things at the same time, they start fitting together. I just… do not want to speak too soon.”
“That is okay,” Sara smiled. “You can show us your way.”
First Adam pointed to the wheel mark. Then he pointed to the tape. In the end, he lifted a finger toward the window.
“If light falls like this, the shadow must belong to something taller,” he explained. “And if there is something behind the map, there may be a small cupboard there.”
Emma opened her mouth wide. “Wait, you really are putting it together like a puzzle!”
A small smile appeared on Adam’s face. “I guess I am.”
Meanwhile, Toby noticed that a first-grader carrying drawings had become tangled near the corner of the hallway. He ran to him right away.
“Don’t be afraid, I’ll help you,” he said gently.
At that moment, his hands filled with the strength he only knew when he was protecting someone. Carefully, he lifted the drawings and the bag so the boy could stand up again.
“Thank you,” breathed the little classmate.
“You’re welcome,” Toby answered. “Just go slowly.”
Sara, meanwhile, lit a tiny spark on the old sign by the wall. Under the paint, a arrow showed up, one that nobody had noticed before. It led to the old map corner near the storage room.
“There!” cried Emma.
“But first we need proof,” Leo added. He took three quiet breaths and looked through the wall, just like he could. Only for a moment. Then his head hurt a little, but he had already seen the narrow space behind the map and the low cupboard.
“I see it,” he said. “It is there. It really is there.”
The children moved to the old notice-board corner. The hallway still acted as if it wanted to play tricks on their direction, but together they did not let it fool them. Adam walked a little behind and kept watching the little things: reflections, colors, marks. Each new detail lit up another piece inside his head.
“Mr Shadowmorph wanted us to think that someone from the class took the box,” he said. “But the tape on the floor, the shadow in the window, and the wheel mark on the ground point to a move through the storage room.”
“So he wanted to make us argue,” Emma frowned.
“Exactly,” Toby nodded.
Behind the map, there really was a narrow cupboard. Leo opened it, and everyone leaned forward at once. Inside lay the box with the supplies. Next to it was a little note with a smiling face drawn on it.
“That is from him,” said Sara.
Adam looked at the note and then at the colored tape he held in his hand. “Something does not fit,” he muttered. “The smile on the paper is drawn in a different way. And the tape is not the color it is pretending to be.”
“So he lied with the paper too,” Emma clenched her fists, but then she calmed down. “No, that does not matter. We know the truth.”
“And we know it together,” Toby added.
Together, they carried the box back to the classroom. Miss Mila welcomed them with calm eyes, as if she knew something strange was happening but wanted them to find the answer on their own.
“Well done,” she said. “And most of all, you did not rush to accuse anyone.”
Leo blushed a little. “I wanted to guess right away.”
“So did I,” Emma admitted and tilted her head. “And that would not have been right.”
An Important Moment
“When a person looks at all the clues first, it is easier to understand what really happened,” Toby said softly.
Sara opened the secret notebook of the Guardians of Little Wonders. The page glimmered gently, and the girl slowly wrote down a new rule:
The answer is clearer when the whole team listens.
Everyone looked at the sentence and then read it quietly again.
“I like it,” said Leo. “This time it was not just my idea or just Adam’s. It was shared.”
Adam lowered his eyes, but he did not look so shy anymore. “Thank you for giving me a chance,” he said.
“We thank you,” Sara smiled. “Without your puzzle pieces, we would have solved this mystery much more slowly.”
For a moment, there was silence. Then Adam remembered something that had been staying in his head since the start of the day.
“One more thing,” he said carefully. “From my grandmother’s stories, I know the name Mr Shadowmorph.”
Surprised silence filled the classroom.
“Really?” Emma whispered.
Adam nodded. “She said it like the name meant something. I just do not know what yet.”
Sara looked at her friends and then smiled. It was clear that one adventure had ended, but a new little mystery had begun. It was not scary. It was only interesting. And because of that, everyone was already looking forward to it.
“Then we’ll save it for next time,” said Miss Mila with a smile that could cheer people up even in a quiet voice.
The children nodded. The box of supplies was back, the project could begin, and Adam was no longer the new boy on the edge of the class. He was one of the Guardians of Little Wonders.
And in the secret notebook, the new rule still glimmered for a while, even after the class got back to work.
To be continued…
