A dnes ju volal naozaj. Pri cestičke sa čosi zalesklo.

„Vidíš to?“ spýtala sa potichu.

Svetlík sa vzniesol vyššie. „Vidím! Niečo malé a lesklé!“ zašvitoril.

Natiahla ruku, no šiška bola príliš plná neporiadku.

V korunách stromov zašumelo a niekde ďalej zazvonil vtáčik.

„Ani kvietok. Je to malý lesný poklad.“

Potom babka Malá ukázala na šišku. „Najprv ju treba jemne očistiť. Pozri, medzi lupienkami je veľa ihličia a kamienkov. Lampášik sa tam tlačí. Keď mu urobíme miesto, bude sa cítiť lepšie.“

„A potom sa rozsvieti?“ spýtala sa Lili.

„Keď bude pripravený, áno,“ povedala babka Malá. „Niektoré poklady sa prebúdzajú pomaly. To je v poriadku.“

Lili prikývla. Už sa necítila netrpezlivá. Skôr zvedavá. A trochu pyšná, že môže pomôcť.

Babka Malá položila košík na zem. Vedľa neho bola mäkká hrudka zeleného machu. „Najskôr čistíme, potom uložíme do bezpečia,“ povedala. „A keď treba, počkáme.“

„Videli ste to?“

Mäkké, tiché a bezpečné.“

Lili opatrne zdvihla šišku oboma rukami. Bola ľahšia, ako čakala. Spolu s babkou Malou ju položili do machu.

Najprv len slaboučkým svetielkom, potom jasnejším a teplejším.

„Ach,“ povedala ticho.

Nechali ich tam, kde boli, v bezpečnom machu. To bolo správne miesto.

„A čistiť jemne,“ dodal Svetlík.

Babka Malá sa usmiala. „A počúvať, kedy treba pomôcť a kedy len chvíľku postáť.“

A chvíľu počkať.

The Forest of Little Lights, part 9: The Light in the Pinecone

The Story Begins

That morning, Lily walked along the little path at the edge of the magic forest. Her small leaf-shaped bag bounced softly on her shoulder, and curious sparkles shone in her eyes. Beside her floated Glimmer. His round glowing body shone with warm golden light, a little calmer than usual today.

The forest was soft and quiet. Pine needles under their feet rustled like a gentle song, and green moss grew between the roots. Lily smiled because she loved it when the forest seemed to call her somewhere. And today, it really did. Something shiny glimmered near the path.

"Do you see it?" she asked softly.

Glimmer floated higher. "I see it! Something small and shiny!" he chirped.

They both bent down to the ground. In the pine needles lay a big pinecone. It was open, brown, and pretty, but something sparkled inside it. When Lily leaned closer, she saw a tiny lantern. It was no bigger than a walnut. But it was not shining.

"Oh!" Lily cried. "A little lantern! Please shine!"

She blew on it gently, then touched it very carefully with one finger. Nothing.

Glimmer came closer, and his light shone a little brighter for a moment. He lifted his eyebrows, as if to say, not yet.

Lily frowned. "Why won't it shine? It's so nice."

She looked again at the pinecone. Then she saw that it was full of tiny needles and little stones. Some were stuck deep between the scales.

"Maybe it's tired," Glimmer said softly. "Or maybe something is in the way."

Lily wanted to wake the lantern right away. She reached out, but the pinecone was too full of messy bits. When she touched one small stone, it moved just a little and stayed there.

At that moment, Glimmer flashed only very, very weakly. It was as if he was whispering, "Slowly, slowly."

The little girl stopped. She listened. A soft wind moved around them. The trees rustled above, and somewhere far away, a bird sang. The forest was not in a hurry. The forest knew how to wait.

"I think it does not want us to be fast," Lily said, and she sat down on her heels. "But what now?"

Just then, small footsteps came from the path. Grandma Little arrived. She had a silver braid, a blue knitted shawl on her shoulders, and a basket full of pinecones in her hand. She smiled so calmly that even the air around her seemed to grow quiet.

"Good day, children," she said. "What little secret do you have here?"

Lily pointed at the pinecone. "We found a lantern, but it does not want to shine."

Grandma Little knelt beside it. She looked in silence for a moment, then smiled even more.

"I will tell you a riddle," she said gently. "What wakes up when we wash it without water and put it in a soft bed?"

Lily wrinkled her nose and thought hard. Glimmer put his hands on his cheeks and thought too.

"The sun?" Lily guessed.

Grandma Little laughed softly. "No, but you are close."

"A flower?" Glimmer tried.

"Not a flower either. It is a little forest treasure."

Then Grandma Little pointed to the pinecone. "First, we must clean it gently. Look, there are many needles and stones between the scales. The lantern is squeezed in there. If we make room for it, it will feel better."

"And then it will shine?" asked Lily.

"When it is ready, yes," said Grandma Little. "Some treasures wake up slowly. That is all right."

Lily nodded. She did not feel impatient anymore. Now she felt curious. And a little proud that she could help.

When Things Start to Change

Grandma Little set her basket on the ground. Next to it was a soft clump of green moss. "First we clean, then we put it somewhere safe," she said. "And when we need to, we wait."

So all three of them began to work. Lily took out the pine needles one by one. Her fingers were very gentle, so she would not poke or push the pinecone. Meanwhile, Glimmer lit the darker places so they could see better. His light was quiet and warm. Grandma Little took the tiny stones from the open spaces and placed them aside so they would not get in the way.

"This one is out now," said Lily.

"And this one too," whispered Glimmer.

"Very good," praised Grandma Little. "When we help each other, everything becomes easier."

Soon the pinecone was cleaner. It no longer looked heavy. Inside it, something tiny flashed for a moment, like a drop of light.

Lily smiled. "Did you see that?"

"Yes," Glimmer blinked. His glow became a little brighter.

Then Grandma Little pointed to the soft moss near the tree roots. "This will be a good bed. Soft, quiet, and safe."

Lily carefully lifted the pinecone with both hands. It was lighter than she had thought. Together with Grandma Little, she placed it in the moss. The moss gently hugged it like a blanket. Glimmer sat down beside it, and his light reflected on the green threads of the moss.

"Now?" Lily whispered.

"Now we wait," said Grandma Little.

So they waited. Not for long, just long enough. The forest breathed calmly around them. Small branches swayed softly. A bird whistled far away. Everything was quiet, but not empty. It was a quiet that seemed to say: all is well.

Lily sat by the moss and looked at the pinecone. She did not rush anymore. She found out that waiting does not have to be boring. Sometimes it is the time when something important is getting ready.

Suddenly, the pinecone flashed again. Then once more. And at last, the little lantern woke up. First it gave only a tiny light, then a brighter, warmer one. It spread a gentle golden glow over the moss.

"Hooray!" Lily whispered, so she would not frighten it.

Glimmer shone all over. His round body glowed so brightly that it almost looked as if the whole forest were smiling too.

Grandma Little nodded with a happy smile. "You see? When we care for something slowly and gently, it can wake up beautifully."

The lantern in the pinecone blinked its light like a little child opening its eyes for the first time. Its glow was soft, calm, and lovely.

Lily leaned closer. At that moment, she noticed something new. Near the moss lay a tiny torn ribbon. On it was a small note, drawn almost so soft that you could barely see it.

"What is that?" she asked.

Grandma Little took the ribbon in her fingers and looked at it kindly. "Ah," she said softly. "That looks like a piece of a lost forest song."

Lily opened her mouth wide. "Songs get lost too?"

"Sometimes, yes," Grandma Little answered. "But they always know where to return when someone looks for them with a quiet heart."

Glimmer stared at the ribbon, and his light moved softly. It was as if he could hear a little melody hiding somewhere among the trees.

Lily did not take the ribbon or the lantern away. They left them there, where they were, safe in the moss. That was the right place. The little treasure shone, the pinecone rested, and the forest was happy with its new light.

An Important Moment

"Today we learned to wait," Lily said happily.

"And to clean gently," Glimmer added.

Grandma Little smiled. "And to listen when we need to help, and when we only need to stand still for a moment."

When the sun sank lower between the branches, a golden dot shone from the path in the moss. Lily looked once more at the lantern, then at Glimmer, and then at Grandma Little.

She felt calm. And stronger than in the morning. Because she had learned that not everything must be fixed right away.

It is enough to be gentle. And wait a little.
