Nebola najhlučnejšia v triede, no všímala si veci, ktoré iní prešli bez pohľadu. Pri lavičke zbadala drobnú kľúčenku. Bola malá, strieborná a mala modrý prívesok v tvare hviezdičky.

„To niekomu chýba,“ zamrmlala si.

„Videla som to?“ zašepkala.

Svetielko nezmizlo.

„A kto ich zamieša,“ dodal Leo.

Sára otvorila obal a chvíľu držala pero nad papierom.

Niečo malé, tajné a dôležité.

Potom zmizol.

Sára sa tam pozrela a stisla pery. „Niekto tu mieša veci dokopy,“ zašepkala.

„A možno aj úmysly,“ dodala Ema.

„Tak to budeme musieť sledovať,“ povedal Leo.

„Spolu,“ uzavrel Tobi.

A práve to bolo krásne.

Keď sa deti rozišli do tried, kľúčenka už svietila len v Sárinej pamäti. No tajný zošit zostal.

Akoby niekto neviditeľný práve urobil prvý krok do školy.

Guardians of Little Wonders, part 1: The Light in the Lost Keychain

The Story Begins

Morning at school began as noisy as always. The hallway near the classrooms was full of footsteps, laughter, and the soft shuffle of indoor shoes. By the bench near the window, one bag stood open, someone was closing a locker fast, and Miss Mila was reminding the children to hurry to class.

Sara stood a little apart. She was not the loudest child in the room, but she noticed things that others walked past without looking. Near the bench, she saw a tiny keychain. It was small, silver, and had a blue star-shaped charm.

"Someone is missing this," she murmured.

She stepped closer. Then she saw something strange. The shadow of the bench was longer than it should have been. It reached almost to the classroom door, even though the sun was only shining in from a side window. Around the bench, a few little things were lying there too: a hair tie, a pencil, and a small piece of paper with a drawn cat.

Carefully, Sara picked up the keychain. At once, she wanted to take it straight to the lost-and-found basket. But something inside her made her stop for one more moment.

"Maybe someone is looking for it right now," she said in a quiet voice.

"What did you find?" asked Miss Mila as she walked by.

"A keychain," Sara answered. "I found it by the bench."

The teacher smiled. "Good job finding it. Try to find out who it belongs to. Sometimes a small thing can matter a lot."

Sara nodded, but she still felt that something unusual was happening around her. When she looked at the keychain again, it was only cold and quiet at first. Then a soft light flickered in her hand.

The girl froze.

"Did I see that?" she whispered.

The light did not go away. Instead, it hid for a moment and then showed itself again. When Sara thought about helping someone, the keychain glowed gently. When she told herself that she only wanted to put it away quickly and be done, the light disappeared.

Sara swallowed. Now she knew it was no accident.

"All right," she whispered. "So who are we looking for?"

Just then, the little light stretched into a thin line and pointed toward the end of the hallway. Sara looked after it. By the door of the younger children’s classroom stood a short girl with brown braids. She was holding a few books and checking her jacket pockets with a worried face.

The light on the keychain shone again.

Sara walked down the hall. Meanwhile, she noticed that other things seemed to be moving too. One indoor shoe was by the door even though it had been near the locker a moment ago. Someone was saying that a lunch box was missing. And the shadow under the bench stretched again, as if an invisible person were watching what was happening there.

"Excuse me," Sara said to the younger girl. "Is this yours?"

The girl lit up just like the keychain.

"Oh, yes!" she cried. "I have been looking for it since morning. I dropped it when I was helping carry books for a friend from first grade."

"So you were helping?" Sara asked.

"Only a little," the girl said with a smile. "But I did not want to be late for class, so I did not notice it right away."

Sara handed her the keychain. The light blinked once more, as if it was happy.

"Thank you," said the girl, clipping it to her zipper.

Sara was just about to turn away when she saw another tiny thing under the bench. It was a lost hair tie, but next to it there was also a small shine that did not belong to the sun. The younger child did not notice it. At the other end of the hallway, two children were arguing about whose colorful marker it was. The mess was small, but it spread strangely through the whole hall.

When Things Start to Change

"This is not ordinary mess," Sara muttered.

"I don’t think so either," said a voice behind her.

Leo appeared with his backpack over one shoulder and his usual confident grin. "Something is going on here. I can see that things are moving, but not in a normal way."

"You can see that?" Sara asked in surprise.

"Only for a moment through the wall of the locker," Leo admitted, rubbing his forehead. "Just for three breaths. Then I get a headache if I show off too much."

Emma came running up behind him with pencils in her hair and a sheet of paper in her hand. On the paper was a drawing of the same keychain Sara had held a moment before.

"I drew it so I would remember it," she explained quickly. "And maybe we could make marks in the hallway so lost things would be easier to find."

Toby arrived last. He did not say much. Instead, he stood beside the younger girl, as if gently protecting her from the growing crowd in the hallway.

"Don’t worry," he said softly. "We’ll help you."

Sara looked at them, and suddenly she felt that she was not alone anymore.

"I think we need to find out why little things are disappearing here and why the shadows are so long," she said.

"And who is mixing them up," Leo added.

"And where all this can be written down," Emma said.

Toby just nodded. "And how to protect the ones who cannot manage on their own."

After a while, all four children moved to a quiet corner by the notice board around the bend in the hallway. There, it was a little emptier. There was only one locker, a few colorful pictures, and a small shelf for school supplies. Sara bent down behind the locker and pulled out an old notebook with a hard cover. On the front was a tiny shiny star sign.

"That’s it," Emma breathed.

The notebook was empty, but it seemed to be waiting just for them. On the first page, there was a place ready for writing.

Sara opened the cover and held the pen above the paper for a moment. Then she looked at her friends.

"If we are to be the Guardians of Little Wonders, we need a rule," she said seriously.

Leo leaned forward. "Then write it."

Slowly, Sara wrote the first sentence. The letters were a little crooked, but clear.

A gift is for helping, not for showing off.

When she finished the last word, the keychain in her other hand glowed softly. This time the light was not bright. It was warm, gentle, and sure. The blue charm seemed to breathe light for a moment too.

"That was lovely," said Miss Mila, who appeared by the corner as if she had been there all along. "Some good things happen quietly."

The children looked at one another. All of them felt that something had begun. Something small, secret, and important.

But then, right after that, a strange shadow flickered by the bench again. For one second, it had the shape of a tall, thin man in a long purple coat. He was not scary, more sly, like someone who hides a toy and waits to see if you notice.

Then he vanished.

Sara looked that way and pressed her lips together. "Someone is mixing things up," she whispered.

"And maybe even intentions too," Emma said.

"Then we will have to watch," Leo said.

"Together," Toby finished.

Meanwhile, the younger girl clipped the keychain to her zipper and smiled. The hallway slowly became calm again. The hair tie was found. The indoor shoe went back to the locker. Even the argument about the marker turned into laughter when they discovered that the marker had been under the bench the whole time.

An Important Moment

Sara closed the secret notebook carefully, as if she were holding something very precious. She knew her gift would not light up for just anybody. She had to truly want to help. Only then would the light show the way.

And that was beautiful.

When the children went back to their classrooms, the keychain stayed only in Sara’s memory. But the secret notebook remained. The first rule was written down. The club had begun to exist.

Still, a soft and unexplained shadow stayed in the hallway for a little while longer. It was quiet, hidden, and strange enough for them to notice. It was as if someone invisible had just taken the first step into the school.

Sara turned to her friends and smiled.

"Tomorrow we will keep looking," she said.

"And this time as the Guardians of Little Wonders," Emma added.

And so an ordinary school morning became the start of a secret adventure.
